Ngaio weevil for Bug of the Year 2025

Ngaio weevil for Bug of the Year 2025 I am the spokesweevil for the critically endangered ngaio weevil that lives on one island, Takapourewa, in Aotearoa, New Zealand.

I want to create awareness of the plight of our endangered invertebrates through the 2025 Bug of the Year competition

Thanks to everyone who voted for ngaio weevil! I am considering options for next election!

The results are in, and New Zealanders have crowned the ngāokeoke (New Zealand velvet worm, Peripatoides novaezealandiae) the 2025 Bug of the Year!

The whē (New Zealand praying mantis) came second, while another unusual forest dweller – the giant springtail – took third place. The ātaka (exquisite Olearia owlet moth) and the rō (giant stick insect) came in fourth and fifth, respectively.

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE VELVET WORM - NEW ZEALAND BUG OF THE YEAR 2025!

We translocated 30 ngaio weevils as an insurance population in 2013 to a nearby island. This image shows the funding we were working with (none) to save a species from extinction - your vote at https://bugoftheyear.ento.org.nz/vote-here-2025/ could help us finally get noticed as in need of some attention!

Vote here for the ngaio weevil: https://bugoftheyear.ento.org.nz/vote-here-2025/ a critically endangered flightless beetle, in need of your love to help it get publicity by winning NZ Bug of the Year 2025. After centuries of neglect, only 300 remain and your vote could help us get funding and recognised as needing help to research how to protect it from the 30,000 hungry endemic reptiles called tuatara that live with them on Takapourewa/Stephens Island in Marlborough, NZ.
