What Is a Days for Girls Kit?

Ever wondered what actually goes inside a Days for Girls kit? 🧵✂️
Each kit is lovingly handmade by volunteers and contains:
🩷 A washable, reusable shield — worn inside underwear for protection
🩷 Absorbent liners — that can be washed and dried in the sun
🩷 A carrying bag — so everything stays private and portable
🩷 Soap — for washing and hygiene
🩷 Underwear — because sometimes the basics aren't a given
🩷 A health booklet — with information in the local language about menstrual health

The whole kit lasts up to 3 years with proper care. That's 3 years of school days not missed. 3 years of dignity. 3 years of possibility. 💛
No disposables. No waste. No girl left behind.

When men understand menstrual health, communities change.

In Cambodia, Days for Girls’ Men Who Know program is helping men become advocates, educators, and leaders in menstrual health.

Mr. Pheak Phoun’s journey is only one example. After participating in the Men Who Know program and working with the DfG Social Enterprise in Siem Reap, he became a menstrual health educator. Today, he serves as a Program Manager with Days for Girls, training teachers and helping bring menstrual health education into schools across Cambodia.

“As teachers and students learn more about their health, they become more open and confident talking about it,” he shared. “Students are no longer shy like they used to be. When they have health-related concerns, they come forward to ask questions.”

On this International Women's Day, March 8th, we celebrate the volunteers, supporters & partners who believe that menstrual health is a human right. Behind every menstrual health kit made at Days for Girls Nelson New Zealand Team there is a story.
An organisation assisting us with funding
A volunteer/supporter buying or donating fabric
A volunteer cutting fabric
A team sewing shields/liners/ bags
A partner to help deliver our kits to communities
Together, these small acts create a powerful ripple effect that helps girls/women manage their periods safely & confidently. Males are also crucial partners in the efforts to shatter the stigma & limitations associated with menstruation. Education is the key to success.

Through our partnership with Convoy of Hope, Days for Girls is reaching 3,500 girls across Kenya with menstrual health education and washable menstrual health Kits.

“I have been using a piece of mattress to manage my periods and during my period, I don't come to school for like three days. I am happy I will be using this kit to manage my periods” - Priscila Arukudi

“I now understand how to keep myself clean during my period and how to use the washable pads properly. I feel more confident.” - Kenya Student

In communities where access and open conversation haven’t always been guaranteed, this work is helping create space for knowledge, confidence, and dignity.

Kenya is just part of the story. This impact is part of a broader 4-country partnership with Convoy of Hope supporting more than 10,000 girls across Burkina Faso, Kenya, Niger, and Zambia.

A big thank you to all who voted for our "DIGNITREE" at the Nelson Cathedral. With 324 public votes we surprised ourselves and came 13th out of 70 exhibits! Since then we have had numerous enquiries from locals wanting to join us. It is lining up to be another busy year for our team, who are committed to keeping girls in school and giving them the education they thoroughly deserve.

Amongst all the community Xmas trees at Nelson Cathedral this year you will find "DIGNITREE". Days for Girls Nelson New Zealand Team have used our many talented volunteers to spread the good work our charity does. Our decorative dolls represent the many different cultures we serve. The words help convey our message and the flags show you the countries our team has distributed to this year.
All the trees are on display until January 16th. It's a festive wonderland to take children to and you may just be inspired enough by "DIGNITREE" to give her your vote!!

On Sunday November 23rd at Grace Church in Richmond Hamlin Fistula New Zealand & Days for Girls Nelson New Zealand Team combined to raise awareness of the challenges women face in accessing period products and maternal healthcare. It felt very meaningful to support one another in a mission of restoring dignity to women & girls. Thank you to everyone who supported both causes. Remember to drop off your knitted hats to Days for Girls Nelson and we will get them to Christchurch when we have a good quantity.
Thank you to everyone who supported the Xmas cake raffle. Our lucky winner was Kylee Robinson from Nelson. Lovely that her mum is a volunteer at Days for Girls Nelson. She will also get to enjoy the delicious cake also!
The Nelson Women's Choir thoughtful song selection & vibrant colours brought such joy to the room & perfectly echoed the spirit of our work and the women we serve. It really was a moving and uplifting performance.

What's happening at Days for Girls Nelson today? It has a festive feel, with so much creativity going on! Preparing our tree for the Nelson Cathedral Xmas display. Delivering the message of what Days for Girls is all about. Wonderful to have so many volunteers, who believe in keeping a girl in school to give her the education she throughly deserves.

At Days for Girls Nelson we have been a drop off point for volunteers knitting these hats and it is wonderful to see that they have arrived safely in Ethiopia. Thank you to all those who have knitted the hats. We will continue to collect them and get them safely to Christchurch for the next trip to Ethiopia.

‘Hats for Hamlin’ have landed in Ethiopia today via our adventure tour participants 🇪🇹 Over 4,500 beautiful baby hats, lovingly knitted by people all over New Zealand 💜 Here’s a photo of Julie and Darlene who have brought hats from Palmerston North knitters. We can’t wait to deliver them to Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia staff tomorrow for distribution to the midwives at rural clinics, helping keep babies warm and encouraging mums to give birth safely with a Hamlin midwife 🧶

This will be an ongoing project for us, you can find out how to get involved at www.hamlinfistula.org.nz/hats
