Don was a man of boundless curiosity and a deeply held conviction for creating a better world. Whether harmonizing in a barbershop quartet, advocating for climate action, or trapping pests on Kaipūpū Sanctuary, his energy was infectious. He held a profound respect for Māori culture, dedicating himself to the beauty of Te Reo as a learner and a teacher. As a community psychiatrist, he worked tirelessly and with immense heart, providing a steady hand and a compassionate ear to his patients. Don’s greatest passion remained his family and friends.

Welcome to the 9th edition of our Maramataka Matariki, which follows the Māori lunar calendar closely and includes Ruhanui this year. Each lunar month is accompanied by stunning artwork, created in wānanga by “Te Ohu Weka”, a collaboration of Te Tauihu artists led by Robin Slow and Mat Tait. As always all proceeds go towards Te Ataarangi’s grassroots reo revitalisation programmes across Te Tauihu/ the Top of the South.

E Glenda, e te rangatira, nau mai ki ō mātou ngākau. I tū koe hei mema motuhake mō Te Ataarangi ki te Tauihu o Te Waka-ā-Māui — ki reira, i tiaki, i ārahi, i whakamana i te reo rangatira.

Ko tō mahi, he taonga nā tōu ngākau pono — ka tupu, ka rea, ka ora tonu i ngā waha o ō uri.

Haere, e hoa, haere. Moe mai rā i roto i te ātaahua o ngā maunga o Te Tauihu. Ka mimiti te puna, engari ko tōna wai ka rere tonu i roto i ō mātou ngākau.

Oranga Reo ki Whakatū! 🍠🍂 Kua tae mai te Ngahuru. Kei te ruanuku haere a Tamanui te Rā. Kei te ruruhi haere a Hine Raumati. Ko Ngahuru te kaupapa o tō mātou Oranga Reo ki Whakatu Marae i tērā wiki.

The first of our sustianed immersion noho in Whakatū Nelson for the year, exploring karakia, kai and more relating to autumn. Kei runga noa atu koutou!
