A well deserved award, Congratulations Plant Hawke's Bay Ltd!

Plant Hawke's Bay Ltd is helping restore the region’s natural landscapes while protecting local biodiversity through its eco-sourced native plant programme. Their dedication to conservation, erosion control and habitat restoration has earned them recognition as a finalist in the Ballance Farm Environment Awards for the East Coast region.

Despite recovering from Cyclone Gabrielle’s devastating impacts, the team remains committed to rebuilding Hawke’s Bay’s native plant population one plant at a time. Congratulations on this well-deserved achievement and ongoing contribution to the region’s environmental future.

We were delighted to welcome Year 5 and 6 students from Puketapu School to our Kaikoura Stream Demonstration site alongside Wharerangi Marae. Tipene Cottrell welcomed the group and shared the significance of the area before the students rolled up their sleeves and got stuck in.

Together, we planted more native plants to help restore and enhance the stream environment, contributing to the ongoing efforts to improve water quality, biodiversity, and habitat along the Kaikoura Stream.

A huge thank you to the students, teachers, parent helpers, Wharerangi Marae, local stream resident Matthew Truebridge, Tipene, and his whānau for making the day such a memorable and meaningful experience. It's inspiring to see our next generation taking an active role in caring for our local environment.

In this video Tipene Cottrell from Wharerangi Marae shares the history of the Taipo Stream, reflecting on what is once looked like through an old image.

It's a powerful reminder of how our waterways and landscapes have changed over time, and why the work to restore and protect them is so important for future generations.

A huge thank you to Digabit Hawkesbay for getting started on the walking tracks at the Newstead Remnant Bush Block Project. Not only are they helping create access for the community to enjoy and connect with this special space, but they’ve also shown incredible generosity along the way. Despite the significant rise in fuel costs since their original quote was provided, Digabit chose to honour their original pricing to help give back to our project and the wider community.

Support like this makes a real difference and shows the power of local businesses backing community-led environmental projects. We’re incredibly grateful for your support and commitment to helping bring this project to life.

A huge thank you to the Hawke's Bay Regional Council team for their hard work tackling Old Man’s Beard at the Newstead Remnant Bush Project. Old Man’s Beard is a highly invasive vine that smothers native vegetation and threatens the health of our precious bush remnants. Removing it is a big job, but every effort helps protect and restore biodiversity within the Ahuriri catchment. The team spread out and GPS'ed sites where they found plants (for future years), pulled out seedlings and cut and pasted larger vines.

Ngā mihi to everyone involved in this important mahi.

If you are still after some poplar poles for your property to help with erosion. Hawke's Bay Regional Council have extended there sale until the 22nd June.

Online poplar and willow pole sales extended until 22 June, following strong demand this season 🧑‍🌾

Due to increased interest, stocks are being made available for longer than initially planned.

The significant uptake highlights the ongoing importance of erosion control in Hawke’s Bay. This mahi aligns with our focus on Land and Water Health as a priority outlined in our 2026-2030 Strategy, particularly as landowners continue to address the impacts of severe weather and protect vulnerable soils.

We’re incredibly grateful to PlaceMakers Hawke's Bay for donating these beautiful picnic tables for our Newstead Remnant Bush Project, now installed and ready for the community to enjoy when the area opens to the public. These tables create a welcoming space for visitors, volunteers, schools, and whānau to stop, connect, and appreciate this special native bush remnant.

A huge thank you to the team at Placemakers for supporting our vision for the Ahuriri catchment and this project.
