Ngati Manawa Marae Community Resiliance Project
Tena koutou Whanau,
We have received a significant amount of money for completing a project to be able to provide an emergency evacuation center should there be a large scale disastrous event.
We are getting solar panels, batteries, plus a diesel generator . This system should be able to cope with running our Marae completely for at least 3 to 4 days
We are also putting in 2 Water tanks which will require earthworks of some sort to take over our water needs if the town supply should go down. This will be a safe Water system with apparatus which makes the tank water safe for human consumption.
Added to this we will get a new container, stacked with supplies needed in an emergency.
For this project we have to close the Marae for the month of Feb. 4 weeks are necessary because H&S concerns necessitate the closure. 2nd of Feb is the chosen closing day. Our Marae will have a closing Karakia , time to be advised later.
If any of our hapu members enter the area and are injured there is liability for entering a restricted, signposted area.
Tipapa also have a funded project .
We made sure that both Marae would not close at the same time. Rangitahi will close first because our project is a bit bigger than Tipapa, but they will close after us.
We have to start quickly because we are already a couple of months behind. The project has to be completed by a certain date or the money will have to be returned.
116 marae applied for funding, 16 received the funding including two from Ngati Manawa.
We have to acknowledge the help Ngati Manawa Runanga have given towards this project especially Kat and Tania. We are very fortunate to have such highly skilled Wahine looking after our iwi.
Nga mihi
