As we enjoy longer daylight hours, it’s also a good time to do a few quick fire-safety jobs around the home:

🔔 Check your smoke alarms. Make sure they’re working and in the right places.

🏠 Make an escape plan. Know two ways out of your home where possible.

🚶Walk through your escape plan with everyone in the household and make sure you have a safe meeting point outside.

⏰ As daylight saving approaches, we want you to check your smoke alarms

Every second person who dies in a house fire is over 60.

To give yourself and your older family, friends and neighbours the earliest possible warning, you need smoke alarms installed in every bedroom, hallway and living area.

One of the most commonly overlooked places for a smoke alarm is the bedroom. When you’re asleep, you can’t smell smoke, but smoke alarms can and they’ll wake you up if a fire gets started – so you can get out fast.

✅ Install alarms in every bedroom, hallway and living area

22 callouts for August + 11 callouts so far in September brings us to 210 for 2026, compared with 282 callouts across the whole of 2025! 👀

Last week, some of our crew had the opportunity to practise and refine skills by cutting a car.

The tools we use for this can include cutters and spreaders. These can be used in a number of ways, from cutting a door off, cutting away the back of a seat to help safely remove a patient, pushing the dash up if a patient becomes trapped by it or even removing the roof.

During this training night, we focused on removing the roof. Working as a team to remove windows, cut seat belts, remove doors and cut the pillars of the vehicle allows us to work efficiently and safety for our patients in need.

We are incredibly grateful to Paeroa Towing Services for donating these vehicles and giving our crew the opportunity to train in realistic scenarios. Opportunities like this are invaluable in helping us maintain the skills we rely on when it matters most. ❤️‍🔥🚒

Brrrrr! Many parts of the motu are feeling the cold, which means there are fires and heaters cranking in lots of households 🥶

So, this is a reminder to keep a one metre clearance around your heater or fireplace. Soft furnishings such as blankets, clothes, beds and couches don’t need to be touching a heat source to catch fire, if they are too close, they will burn!

Hot tip: If you’re unsure, measure it. Remind yourself how big a metre is because ‘she’ll be right’ won’t cut it!
