Volunteer Spotlight: Ed

As we celebrate National Volunteer Week, today we want to recognise Ed and all of our incredible volunteer drivers who make our Transport to Treatment Service possible.

Ed regularly transports clients to their cancer related appointments, helping ensure they can access the care and treatment they need.

The demand for this service continues to grow. In the last financial year alone, our volunteer drivers travelled 77,212 kilometres and completed 450 drives, often transporting multiple clients to appointments on the same day.

What made you decide to become a volunteer driver?

"The Wairarapa Cancer Society provided incredible support to my wife during her cancer journey, and becoming a volunteer driver is my way of giving something back. I enjoy meeting people from all walks of life and having meaningful conversations along the way. It's a role I find both rewarding and fulfilling."

Thank you, Ed, and thank you to all of our volunteer drivers. Your generosity, compassion, and commitment help ensure people across the Wairarapa can access cancer treatment and support when they need it most.

Volunteer Spotlight: Peter

As part of National Volunteer Week, we're celebrating the incredible volunteers who help make our Centre such a welcoming place.

Peter has been an amazing addition to our Volunteer Gardening Group, helping care for the grounds around the Centre and ensuring they remain a welcoming space for everyone who visits.

Peter, what do you enjoy most about helping care for the gardens?

"Because I enjoy the camaraderie of working together on projects whereby you achieve so much more than by working by yourself. It's why I have been part of the Masterton Lions Club for the past 26 years."

Thank you, Peter, for the care, time, and energy you put into our gardens. Your contribution helps create a warm and welcoming environment for everyone who comes through our doors.

Volunteer Spotlight: Julie

As part of National Volunteer Week, we're celebrating the incredible volunteers who make a difference in our community every day.

Julie has been volunteering with us for many years and has worn many hats over that time. One of those special roles is supporting patients and staff as a volunteer in the oncology day ward.

Julie, what have you learned through volunteering in the oncology day ward?

"It was a pleasure to be asked to be a volunteer in the chemo ward. I was also involved with the fundraising to buy equipment for the ward.

The chemo unit started on Valentine's Day in 2018, and I am the only original volunteer still volunteering in this space..

I get a lot out of volunteering because it helps the nurses, who are really busy and do a great job in very cramped conditions. Having been through chemo myself and having to travel over the hill for treatment, it is wonderful that people do not have to travel.

As a volunteer, you get to read the room, as it were, to see whether people want to have a chat or just have some quiet time. Being a volunteer, you need to be calm and gentle, and go about tasks quietly."

Thank you, Julie, for your years of dedication, compassion, and service. Your lived experience, kindness, and commitment have made a real difference to those we support.

On Friday evening, Elaine had the privilege of attending the Kings of the Pacific event hosted by Pasifika o Wairarapa Trust

It was a wonderful opportunity to connect with members of our local Pasifika community, hear from inspiring guest speakers, and learn more about the values and strengths that underpin Pacific cultures.

One of the strongest messages of the evening was the importance of whānau, community, and looking after our health. These are values that resonate deeply with the work we do every day to support people and whānau affected by cancer across the Wairarapa.

Thank you to Pasifika o Wairarapa Trust for creating such a welcoming and meaningful event. We look forward to continuing to build connections and support the health and wellbeing of our diverse communities.

National Volunteer Week

Volunteer Spotlight: Laurel

As part of National Volunteer Week, we're celebrating the incredible people who give their time to support our community.

Laurel helps out in the office, at fundraising events, and at community engagement activities, bringing amazing energy wherever she goes.

Laurel, what is your favourite part of volunteering at the centre?

"The variety of tasks. One day you can be answering phones, another blowing up balloons for an event, or cutting ribbons for Relay for Life.

While doing all of these, you are also helping people who come face to face into the centre. These can be staff, other volunteers, and most importantly, the people we support.

The best thing of all is the knowledge that everything we do, and any fundraising that is done, stays in the Wairarapa for the people of Wairarapa."
