Did you know the Rotary Club of Kawerau helped the Manawahe community build this play fort way back in 1979? Their continued support also made it possible to give it a much needed spruce up earlier this year.

Thank you to the Rotary Club of Kawerau and our MET working group for making sure the play fort can be enjoyed by future generations of the Manawahe community.

Today, under the beautiful Manawahe winter sun, we planted a Pūriri tree in memory of Janet Milbank, a much-loved founding member of the Manawahe Eco Trust. Friends and family of Janet, including her Mum, Beverley, and son Jake, shared memories and poems, then we sang a verse of "E tū Kahikatea" before planting of the Pūriri.

Moe mai rā, whaea.

A wrap up of news from MET Trappers chat this week...

🐭 Good news from the post-Pindone monitoring - no rats in the Kōkako Block! A few rats close to the edge of our control area kind of spoiled the party, but overall good results. Mice numbers are pretty good too, yeah buddy. Less rats = less predation on native species.

🌞 Malcolm installed a solar panel for one of the auto traps along the Cell Tower. Solar panels in a thick forest, gotta' be dreaming you reckon'? We've been told that these have been tested in some pretty shady spots already, so we know they'll do the job to keep the auto trap working.

📷 Sue and Ken were out on the traplines this week and spotted three kōkako, and also nabbed themselves a stoat. Yeah buddy!

Last month, Caitlin Radford, our Environmental Educator joined a two-day Freshwater Conservation training unit with Tauira Mahi Conservation Training. It's a hands-on introduction to stream ecology and the key methods used to monitor stream health.

Over the two days, participants explored the animals and plants that live in streams, learning about the conditions required for healthy freshwater ecosystems, and gained experience with survey techniques used to monitor these important indicators.

Caitlin is also working on a new module for our own education programme ‘Waiora & Wildlife’, which will be available to Years 5-12. If your school or group is interested in this module, email [email protected]

Hey, what's up! I'm Ronna, one of the volunteers behind the scenes of MET's socials. If you've received a slightly cheeky comment or two, that's probably me.

I'm a big believer in community connections, and the more we embrace what we're passionate about, the right people and opportunities find their way to you. And that's what I hope to bring to MET - to connect with people who enjoy the bush, share some good yarns and maybe even some home baking. There's always work to be done in conservation, so you may as well do it with some mates. Jude's baking (Peter's wife) is always a bonus.

Yesterday, I tagged along with Peter Fergusson, our Development Coordinator for day one of rat monitoring. I have work today, so feeling that FOMO hard looking out the office window.

In one of our yarns, Peter mentioned he'd really appreciate more help in the bush on weekdays. If you've got a morning spare during the week and want to hang out in the Manawahe hills, email us at [email protected] to find out more about what we do.

P.S. The MET AGM is coming up on Saturday, 14 June. Come along for the kōrero, stay for the kai, we'd love to see you there. More info 👇🏽

Adventure, teamwork, and conservation in action!

What a day! Thirteen teams took on the hills of Manawahe for this year’s Manawahe Adventure Race, smashing through steep climbs, conservation and farming themed challenges, and a few muddy moments along the way.

Students from as far as Taupō came out to test their fitness, problem-solving, and wildlife knowledge and they absolutely nailed it. The teamwork, laughs, and effort out there were next level. 💪

We couldn’t have done it without our amazing sponsors who backed us with over $1600 worth of prizes (how good?!). You guys seriously made the day. 🙌

🏆 - exclusive mission for six (valued at $954!)
