Hutt Valley Women's Refuge has been selected as a community group for Z Energy's Good in the Hood initiative at Z High Street!

Voting is simple:

Family violence doesn’t begin with one incident. The beliefs we learn about emotions, relationships, power and what it means to be a man can shape how we relate to others long before violence occurs.

Breaking the cycle means challenging those beliefs and teaching the next generation something different. It means raising boys who know that emotions aren’t weakness, vulnerability is strength, and love never requires control, fear or violence.

Breaking the cycle starts with what we teach the next generation. This is part of the work we do through our Ministry of Justice Children’s Safety Programme, supporting children who have experienced family violence to build safety, resilience and healthier ideas about relationships.

For many years, our Annual Street Appeal has helped raise awareness that family violence affects every community. We are deeply grateful to the volunteers, supporters, businesses and community members whose generosity has supported Hutt Valley Women’s Refuge to provide safety, advocacy and support to women, children and whānau affected by family violence.

As the way people choose to engage and donate continues to evolve, we have made the decision not to go ahead with our Annual Street Appeal. While our street appeal is ending, our work continues every day. Family violence remains a significant issue and we encourage everyone to stand with us by following our campaigns, donating online, and helping promote safe, respectful relationships. Together we can create safer communities and support others to live free from violence.

A reminder for anyone who has a hidden phone - emergency alerts may sound even if your device is on silent. If you have a concealed phone, consider turning it off or switching it to flight mode during the test to help keep it hidden and maintain your safety.

NZ Civil Defence are testing the Emergency Mobile Alert (EMA) system on Sunday 14 June, between 6-7pm ⚠️📲

If you have a hidden second phone for your safety, we recommend turning it off or putting it in flight mode for the duration of the test (6-7pm on Sunday 14 June) to ensure it’s not discovered when the nationwide Emergency Mobile Alert is sent.

Some mobile devices set to silent mode will still emit a sound when the Emergency Mobile Alert test is sent, so switching to flight mode or turning off your device is the only way to avoid the loud sound of the alert.
