Fale to Future Conference 2026 – Samoa 🇼🇸

Our hearts are full after attending the Fale to Future Conference in beautiful Samoa, held at the stunning Taumeasina Island Resort in Apia.

We extend our deepest gratitude to Penina Trust, the only Pacific and first community housing provider based in Tāmaki Makaurau, for hosting and organising such a meaningful and impactful gathering. Your leadership continues to create vital spaces for talanoa, connection, and collective action across our communities.

It was a true honour for our team at Te Matapihi to be invited to attend and contribute to this year’s conference.

We are incredibly proud of our team, who shared their expertise and insights:

Ali Hamilin-Paenga EMBA MALP PGDPH as keynote speaker – Our Land, Our People, Our Homes.

Nazarene Mihaere, Marc Paenga, and Te Ata – Why Housing Doesn't Happen: The Hidden Policy Decisions Shaping Indigenous and Pacific Housing Futures.

Shelby Young, Te Matapihi Board Member and Founder of Manawatia Limited – Accessible by Design: A Kaupapa Māori Approach to Modular, Sustainable Homes for Generations.

Each kōrero reflected the importance of centring our people, our whenua, and our values in housing solutions—now and for future generations.

Being part of this kaupapa was both inspiring and humbling. It reminded us of the power of coming together—grounded in culture, driven by purpose, and united in a shared commitment to ensuring our communities are well-housed and thriving.

Ngā mihi aroha ki a koutou ngā kairangatira o Penina Trust and all who contributed to making this such a special and impactful event. We look forward to continuing this journey alongside you all.

We acknowledge and celebrate Paul White, who attended his final board meeting yesterday after nine years of dedicated service to Te Matapihi.

Paul has been a steady and deeply valued presence throughout a period of significant growth and change for our organisation and the wider Māori housing sector. His leadership, wisdom, and unwavering support for kaimahi has helped guide Te Matapihi through many important milestones, always keeping whānau and kaupapa Māori at the centre of the mahi.
Over his time on the board, Te Matapihi has continued to strengthen its role as the independent voice for Māori housing, advocating for Māori housing policy, supporting regional forums, growing sector capability, and sharing resources to support whānau, hapū and iwi across the housing continuum.

Paul’s contribution to our Mana Kāinga kaupapa and national conferences has been immense. He has consistently backed opportunities that empower whānau and strengthen Māori housing aspirations for future generations. Just last week, he generously hosted our Mana Kāinga tauira in the Hokianga, reflecting the manaakitanga and commitment he has always brought to this work.

As a respected leader from Te Rarawa with decades of experience in Māori development, governance, and housing, Paul has contributed not only to Te Matapihi but to the wider housing and community sector across Aotearoa.

While it is a sad moment to see Paul leave the board table, we know his impact will continue to be felt throughout the housing space and across our communities. We have no doubt he will continue the incredible mahi he has always done for our people.
Ngā mihi nui ki a koe Paul. Thank you for your leadership, your generosity, your guidance, and your belief in our kaupapa over the past nine years. Your legacy within Te Matapihi will remain for many years to come.

Ngā manaakitanga ki a koe me tō whānau.

Ngā mihi maioha,
Te Matapihi

Nā mātou te tino whiwhi!

Our kaimahi came together last week, spending two days in Ōtaki for some much-needed team building. Our training started off with Dr Kathie Irwin, in her beautiful whare in Ōtaki Beach, taking us through her very inspiring program "Rangatiratanga for Life - Becoming the CEO of Yourself". So many amazing takeaways from this kaupapa, our kaimahi walked away from it feeling inspired, motivated and ready to be disrupters in the industry! Ngā mihi nui Dr Kathie 🥰

We had a shared kai with some nourishing kōrero at the table with Taihākurei Durie and Donna Hall to finish off our training in Ōtaki Beach.

Ngā mihi nui to our CEO Ali Hamlin-Paenga for providing the opportunity to connect, learn and wānanga throughout the week. The team are prepped and ready for the year ahead.

He waka eke noa! We are all in this canoe together!

Mauriora 🙏
