💟 Team Purple! 💁‍♀️

Today we are dressed in purple and ready to stroll 🕺 in support of Alzheimers Manawatū and the Memory Walk, something we’ve been proud to support for the past five years. 🖐️

It’s a cause close to our library heart. 💜

Libraries are all about outreach and connecting with our community, including dementia groups and residential care, bringing literacy, stories and hands-on activities to people who may not otherwise have easy access to them. 📚

📚 It’s Banned Books Week!

This week is a chance to reflect on the importance of being able to access a wide range of books, ideas and perspectives.

We’re sharing the American Library Association’s 11 most challenged books of 2025. While these challenges are from the United States, they give us an opportunity to think about the role libraries play in providing access to information and supporting everyone’s reading choices.

Our libraries are here for everyone, with books that inform, inspire, challenge and connect us. 💛

📖 Let books be.

Spring was definitely in the air at the library today! 🌸🤧

Our Home Grown Readers had a great time getting hands-on with flowers today, taking them apart, smelling them and investigating all the different parts. 🌼🔍

And there were a few little stowaways hiding among the petals too... 🐜🕷️

A little science, a lot of curiosity and plenty of very enthusiastic flower (and bug 🤣) investigators! 💚

🧠 What if dyslexia isn’t just about what’s difficult, but also about seeing things differently?

It’s Dyslexia Awareness Week, so we’re taking a closer look at dyslexia and the different ways people think, learn and make sense of the world. 💛

Join researcher, author and consultant Mike Styles for an engaging and practical evening exploring dyslexia, the challenges it can bring, the strengths that can come with it, and how we can better support people who think differently.

Whether dyslexia is part of your life or you simply want to understand it better, come along and join the conversation.

Last Friday, our Home Grown Readers learnt about drip irrigation and got creative with upcycled milk bottles, turning them into some seriously colourful watering systems for the garden. 🪴💦

A little bit of science, a little bit of creativity and A LOT of colour! 🌈

Who knew watering the garden could look this good? 😍💧

📙 Advent by Gunnar Gunnarsson

Every winter, Benedikt ventures into the snowy mountains of Iceland to rescue sheep lost in the blizzards. With his loyal dog and ram beside him, he faces a harsh and unforgiving landscape, finding peace and purpose in the quiet days before Christmas.

A beautiful, atmospheric story about kindness, courage, solitude and our connection to the natural world.

👉 Find it on our Staff Picks display at Te Takeretanga o Kura-hau-pō, or reserve it for pickup at your local Horowhenua library.
