Our Ranger season is getting underway! Whether you’re new to the team or a returning Ranger, there are two important dates coming up.

RANGER INDUCTION — Thursday 15 October, 7–8.30pm | Online
Start the season by meeting fellow volunteers and learning about the roles, training and opportunities available through the Ranger program. We’ll cover monitoring skills, safety and representing TKRI with confidence.

Each season community volunteers survey the kelp restoration site to monitor changes in the wellbeing of the resident kina and the kelp forest. This year, we measured an 87% increase in kelp and a 71% drop in overpopulated kina, since our kaupapa started.

Seeing such positive changes in the bay highlights the incredible efforts made by TKRI's volunteers, project partners and funders, and their dedication to finding new ways to support environmental regeneration.

Come along to this season's Rewilding Ranger induction to meet other active volunteers and hear updates on the season ahead. Through the program, Rangers are trained to take on essential roles that contribute to the long-term outcomes of the project, including monitoring skills, handling safety and representing TKRI with confidence. 📜 Te Tiriti o Waitangi Workshop 📜
Saturday 10th October, 9am-4.30pm | Leigh Community Hall

Join TKRI to explore Te Tiriti o Waitangi (the Treaty of Waitangi) and what it means for the future of Te Kohuroa Matheson Bay. This is an opportunity to better understand Te Tiriti, the importance of working alongside mana whenua, and how our community can make informed decisions to rewild the moana. 🌊 OCEAN YOUTH AOTEAROA 🌊
Monday 28 September - Friday 2 October (School Holidays)

As part of our community education series, we are partnering with Kelly Tarlton's Marine Wildlife Trust to run a rocky shore exploration with their Ocean Youth program this school holidays. Participants (aged 13-17yrs) will spend the day learning about marine management tools and surveying the rockpools at Te Kohuroa to add to an ongoing dataset measuring ecosystem health. TKRI's marine restoration outcomes are intrinsically linked to what is happening on land. After heavy rainfall, Te Kohuroa awa and the surrounding bay often turn brown, as sediment is washed from the whenua (land) to the awa (stream), eventually reaching the moana (ocean).

While some sediment movement is natural, fine soils, steep terrain, and high-energy flows can carry large amounts of sediment downstream during heavy rain. This then settles as a thick layer of mud on the plants and animals that live on the rocky reef and affects their wellbeing.

That's why TKRI takes a 'ridge to reef' approach, recognising that what happens in the upper catchment also affects everything living in the bay. Our volunteers directly contribute to long-term monitoring, habitat restoration, and water quality testing to support ongoing restoration approaches that will improve the health of the entire catchment.

By caring for te whenua and te wai (water), we can help rewild te taiao (environment) together.
