Following on from the recent Waimate District Council meeting discussing possible local government reform, Council have begun meeting with neighbouring councils to discuss options.

To keep you up to date and informed, more details are available on the council website.

COUNCIL TAKES FIRST STEPS TO EXPLORE LOCAL GOVERNMENT REFORM OPTIONS

Council has agreed on kickstarting conversations with South Canterbury councils around potential amalgamation proposals.

It was clear after the public meeting on 14 May, that the public overwhelmingly supports us claiming a seat at the table as equals. Our residents are proud of their Council; a well-run rural council with low debt is an equal to any larger neighbour when it comes to amalgamation discussions.

Council takes the public mandate seriously. It is our obligation to do what’s best for the district. In that spirit, on 25 May, Mayor Craig Rowley, Deputy Mayor Sandy McAlwee and Chief Executive Stuart Duncan will be meeting with their counterparts from Timaru, Ashburton, Mackenzie and Waitaki Districts to begin the conversation.

Council has made a promise to the public that they will be part of this journey. At the heart of any decisions we make will be our community.

We are also unequivocal: if at any stage during these conversations, proposals are made to the detriment of our district, we are prepared to walk away.

REMINDER! An urgent meeting is being held this evening, 7pm at the Waimate Events Centre to discuss the Government’s proposed amalgamation plan.
If you are unable to attend in person, you can attend online via a link on the Waimate District Council website.

Council is calling an urgent public meeting following the Government’s announcement giving councils just three months to develop amalgamation proposals.

🌟 When: 7pm, Thursday 14 May
🌟 Where: Waimate Event Centre

☀️ If you can't attend the meeting, you can join online via a link on Council's website on the day.

This meeting will help you understand the Government’s announcement, what it could mean for our district, and what options may be available. Most importantly, it is a chance for you to have your say on a decision that will shape our identity for generations to come.

We understand this meeting is being held at short notice. Unfortunately, the Government’s deadline leaves no room for delay. While a decision that defines our future cannot be made in 90 days, it certainly will not be made without our communities being front and center.

We urge everyone to engage with us as we navigate this process together. The meeting will be advertised in the Trader, on Facebook, and via a district wide email. Please share this message with friends, family, neighbours, and colleagues.
