This petition is to express opposition to a very large Waimauku fast track development where there is inadequate infrastructure to support it. Concerns particularly relate to even more traffic congestion and increased flooding risk of lowland areas above and below the site. https://petitions.parliament.nz/ae84e6b4-cb60-4172-708c-08def9615f86?lang=en&fbclid=IwY2xjawT_VCpwZG9mAWV4dG4DYWVtAjEwAGJyaWQRMWZHOFpLenhWaXZ5ekhrVWxzcnRjBmFwcF9pZBAyMjIwMzkxNzg4MjAwODkyAAEejCGGk_lgvfc79ioNPx37gkiUD8cbZySE_ot3_9V098TX7f7BYg5jn0xSLc0_aem_p3-gHnhtvy3ToyWoJbuMsQ

We are facing an out-of-sequence fast-track housing development that could change our community for good. The fast-track process should not silence the people who will live with the consequences. Communities deserve a say when major developments affect roads, flooding, services and everyday life.

We all know our community will continue to grow. The real question is whether infrastructure will keep pace, or whether local residents will bear the cost through longer commutes, worsening congestion and increasing pressure on already stretched roads.

The decisions being made today will shape Waimauku for decades to come. If we don't get this right now, future generations will be left dealing with the consequences.

The Fast-track process can limit the usual public planning steps and make it harder for communities like ours to be heard. Chris Bishop has publicly stated that the fast-track panel “can decline a project if its adverse impacts, including infrastructure impacts, are out of proportion to its regional or national benefits.”

That is why Waimauku Community Association has launched a petition asking that the House of Representatives amend the Fast-track Approvals Act 2024 to prohibit the approval of the Waimauku West fast-track development, and to prohibit approval for other housing outside areas identified for future growth unless necessary public infrastructure is planned and funded.

NOW WE NEED YOUR HELP.

Please sign the petition and show Parliament that we must be heard.

We’re pleased to have the support from Chris Penk MP who has said he will support this petition and present it to Parliament.

Infrastructure Minister Chris Bishop has rejected fast-track referral for the development.

Analysis: But there are 200-plus fast-track applications already lodged – their developers should also be asked to contribute more rather that lumping ratepayers with the cost, writes Jonathan Milne.

Residents in the Auckland suburb are concerned a planned housing development will block picturesque views and overshadow heritage buildings.

“At Waitangi in 2024, Prime Minister Christopher Luxon said: “We, like you, believe in localism and devolution, not centralisation and control.” But his government has demanded local councils amalgamate into unitary authorities, and is working to progress environmental legislation that would remove much of a region’s ability to manage its land.” Fox Meyer- Newsroom.

It seems we may be getting less and less say in where developments happen, less protection of the environment and more control of local government by central government.

It seems we may be getting less and less say in where developments happen, less protection of the environment and more control of local government by central government.

Critics warn vague new criteria will create a goldmine for environmental lawyers while scrubbing hard environmental limits from law. Fox Meyer reports.
