Regularly pulling and relocating trap lines is important to maintain effective predator control and prevent pests from becoming accustomed to trap locations.
Rotating trap lines also allows different areas of the whenua to be monitored and controlled, helping maintain consistent protection for native wildlife and regenerating ngahere.

This wild feral pig shows the strength, intelligence, and resilience that make these animals so well adapted to New Zealand's rugged bush. Using its powerful snout, it searches for roots, fungi, insects, and other food, but this rooting behaviour can cause extensive damage to native vegetation, disturb the forest floor, and impact the habitats of native wildlife. Well trained pig dogs work as a team to locate and hold the pig, demonstrating the skill, endurance, and close partnership between hunter and dog. Responsible pig hunting plays an important role in helping manage feral pig numbers and reducing their impact on New Zealand's unique forests, allowing native ecosystems a better chance to recover and thrive.

This trail-camera footage captures a group of wild pigs moving through dense native bush, it shows the pigs actively rooting through the forest floor around tree bases and leaf litter, showing typical social foraging behaviour as they travel and feed together through the ngahere. Their constant digging and overturning of soil tears up the protective leaf layer, damages roots, seedlings, fungi, and invertebrate habitat, increases erosion, and creates disturbed patches that can prevent young native plants from establishing properly. In New Zealand, wild pigs are a major ecological pest because they not only destroy the forest floor through intensive rooting and wallowing, but also prey on native wildlife such as ground-nesting birds, lizards, eggs, and chicks, contributing to the degradation of fragile native ecosystems and reducing the natural regeneration of the ngahere.

Active predator control work within the ngahere, where possum's are captured in a leg-hold trap and humanely dispatched in accordance with best-practice from the K-WEST pest management standards. Possums are one of New Zealand's most destructive introduced pests, causing significant damage to native forests, flowers, fruit, and new growth. The objective of this work is to reduce possum numbers, protect Tangata whenua, support mana whenua me te ngahere restoration, and improve habitat for native wildlife. Through ongoing trapping and monitoring, predator control helps restore mana whenua, strengthen ngahere resilience, bringing together the cultural, environmental, and intergenerational values of the whenua for future generations.
