Johnsonville Scottish Country Dance Club

Johnsonville Scottish Country Dance Club Johnsonville Scottish Country Dance Club welcomes all to the fun, fitness and friendship of social dancing on Monday evenings March - November.

Scottish Country Dancing is a very social form of dancing danced in 'sets' usually with four 'couples' - unlike Highland Dancing which is usually solo dancing. Scottish dress is not required to attend clubs, dances or balls and you don’t need a partner to join a dance club. Johnsonville Scottish Country Dance Club meets Monday evenings 7.40pm Johnsonville School Hall, Morgan Street, Wellington from March-November.

Wednesday 29 April 2026, was International Dance Day, a time to celebrate dance. Johnsonville Club celebrated Scottish Country Dancing by enjoying a wonderful April Tartan Night on Monday evening. A wide range of dancers came along, from new dancers this year at their first Tartan Night to the very experienced, along with visitors from other clubs.

Thanks to our club tutor Rod Downey for devising the varied programme and briefing the dances. This was Rod’s first night back at club following his second knee replacement—he was able to rest his leg between briefings. We were fortunate to dance to fabulous tunes from Jason, Hilary and Shane. Take the opportunity to listen to their music in Pat Reesby’s video of the dance Irish Breakfast Tea, a 32-bar jig devised by Rod at https://youtu.be/Zq0lA-XJY0I?si=2cdqWicsJRdE3b9t

As suggested by the RSCDS in their list of possible dances using the number 6 as the theme for the 2026 International Dance Day, one of the dances on our programme was the lovely strathspey The Birks of Invermay from Book 16.
