Spot the differences...

Cobb Valley, Golden Bay, north of the South: ancient forest, tussock-edged stream, land carved by glaciers, a great place for a hiking holiday...

Okura Stream, Bay of Islands, north of the North: 6 year old regenerating forest, fern-edged stream, land shaped by volcanoes, a great project to live with...

Both good for the soul!

Do you know what this sound is? Down by the Okura Stream, in a shady area with a prehistoric feel, I came across this while working in the rapidly maturing native planting. It made me think of what a pterodactyl might sound like! Or perhaps an asthmatic possum?

It is the sound of Kōtare or Kingfisher chicks snug in their nest in a hole in the clay bank. This stream edge was a mass of ginger, moth plant, taiwan cherry and other noxious w**ds 6 years ago. Now they look out at native ferns, flaxes, shrubs and trees.

We had a Milestone Moment in the Okura environmental restoration project this week with the discovery of selfseeded Kohekohe, Taraire and Karaka growing in the 2 hectare valley of regenerating bush 😍.
We already have lots of selfseeded pioneers like Mahoe and Karamu, plus understory plants like Kawakawa and Hangehange coming through, but these are the first of the late successional species we've found.
The seed is likely to have come via birds spreading it from a small native forest remnant nearby.
It feels so good that, after over 5 years of our care, the conditions are right for the regenerating valley to start to improve itself.

Loving these two free apps to help with plant and bird id! The Merlin one is awesome for birds - after installing, just download the NZ bird pack and choose the common language to be Maori, and you'll be all set to let it listen to the bird song around you.
The Seek app has been so helpful for instant plant id. It has been great for identifying plants we're not familiar with while away on holiday and especially helpful at home for working out just what is a w**d and what is not!
There have been some surprises and lots of easy learning.

So... the next part of the challenge was to get the bridge safely down a steep hill into the Valley and along a narrow track to its final resting place, across the small stream that leaves the wetland and between the two Totara at the end of the video clip...

Can you tell a little Aussie from a little Kiwi?

We've completed this season's planting and now we're working in some neighbouring scrubby areas across our boundary. The aim is to enable a thick, 6m wide buffer zone of natives along the fence and reduce the transfer of w**d seeds into our restoration area.

Last year we selectively removed as many of the noxious w**ds as possible from among the natives there, creating space and light for germination of the seed bed. While plenty more w**ds have come through, they're easy to remove, and some areas are completely coated in these tiny seedlings!

There's a chance these little guys could be more pesky Queensland Poplar but it looks to me like they are tiny Kawakawa seedlings. They will grow and boost the lush mature shrubs thriving along the fence line - exactly what we were hoping for.
