Kerikeri Playcentre A family centred early childhood organisation children learn by playing with their parents, caregiver You and your child play together at Kerikeri Playcentre.

Playcentre is an extension of the home for pre-schoolers including parents, caregivers and extended family. Children are able to venture and explore freely - just as they do at home - and you are encouraged to join in. As an early childhood organisation that is centred on the family, Playcentre is run by the families involved.

Matariki at Playcentre Kerikeri

Tonight, our Playcentre Kerikeri whānau came together with friends and family to celebrate Matariki, a special time to reflect, remember, and connect.

As we gathered, we paid particular attention to Pōhutukawa, the star associated with remembrance. Pōhutukawa encourages us to honour and cherish the memories of loved ones who have passed on, acknowledging their place in our hearts and stories.
Through sharing, learning, and spending time together, our tamariki experienced the values that Matariki brings: reflection on the past, gratitude for the present, and hope for the future.

Thank you to everyone who joined us to make this evening so meaningful. Matariki is a wonderful reminder of the strength of our community and the importance of coming together as whānau.

Amongst Matariki crafting and all the magic of the day, it’s the little moments of connection that feel the most special.

This week, we’ve noticed some heartwarming moments as our little ones have confidently sought out awhi from others at Playcentre. Whether it’s wandering over with arms wide open for a cuddle or stopping by for a reassuring hug, these connections reflect the trust, security, and sense of belonging that our tamariki feel within our learning community. Moments like these are a beautiful reminder of the strong relationships that make our centre such a special place.

When tamariki feel safe, secure, and deeply supported, they begin to build trusting relationships with the caring adults around them - not just their parents, but their wider village too. There’s something so beautiful about knowing our children are growing up surrounded by love, warmth, and people they can lean into. And yes, sometimes that also means mum gets a chance for a hot cup of tea and a quiet moment too.
It really does feel like the village raising our children together again.

Our little artists had an amazing time exploring bright fluro paints at the play centre today! From bold colours to creative masterpieces, the children loved expressing themselves, experimenting with colour, and getting hands-on with sensory play. Seeing their imaginations come to life was the highlight of the day!

At Playcentre Kerikeri, bubbles inspire laughter, movement, and wonder while supporting important learning through sensory experiences, hand-eye coordination, and social interaction. Our community have so many hidden talents, look at this new display sparking conversations about Matariki, the meaning of the stars, and channeling strong authentic Korero about what Matariki means to us all.

This year we pay special attention to the start Pōhutukawa. While many associate the name Pōhutukawa primarily with the iconic New Zealand Christmas tree, within the context of the Māori New Year (Matariki), it refers to a specific and sacred star. It is the eldest child of the Matariki whānau (family) and holds a somber yet vital role in the cycle of life and death. As we look to the horizon during the pre-dawn rising of Matariki, Pōhutukawa invites us to pause, reflect, and honor the memories of our loved ones.
