Two Months On...

The main objective of the Kawerau Doing More with Less Community Project was two-fold, building inclusive and wider participation of communities, and being able to reduce our own environmental impact.

Having had a conversation with Dana Norris (Customer Service Representative, Z Kawerau Energy store) who introduced this simple idea because of the ban on single use plastic bags by all Z Energy stores.

The establishment of the Kawerau Doing More with Less Community Project was set-up and we have gained a groundswell of support from the Z Energy Retailer BOP, Kawerau local businesses and the wider communities.

The reusable newspaper bags takes me back to when we had brown paper bags. The good old days...

The Kawerau Doing More with Less Community Project runs the workshop out from the Kawerau Pou Whakaaro site, 1E Tamarangi Drive who have kindly offered their venue.

Kawerau Pou Whakaaro support building inclusive communities and being environmentally friendly.

The project runs every Thursday afternoon from 1-3 pm with volunteers from all parts of the communities.

The project is open to all members of the community as the core values are manaakitanga (care), kaitiakitanga (guardianship)), whanaungatanga (relationships), kotahitanga (unity) and wairuatanga (spirituality), to ensure the project reflects the cultural diversities, inclusive and wider participation of communities.

There is no cost involved other than a voluntary contribution to make a real, material environmental sustainable difference.

The Kawerau Doing More with Less Community Project is to work in conjunction with community groups to make and provide reusable t-shirt bags and flax-woven bags (harakeke keke) also.

Today, two months on, the interest and partnerships of our diverse and wider communities had grown.

If you are interested in learning how to make the various environmental friendly, reusable items, to take home for yourself , you are more than welcome to attend.

Or, if it is somewhere to hang out, again you are most welcome to join us. The social aspect of the project is infectious. An old Yiddish proverb says, “What soap is to the body, laughter is to the sould.”
