Innovating streets for people - Kawakawa Identifying & trialling measures that can be made to Kawakawa's main street to improve road safety for all users.

Welcome to the new page for Kawakawa's latest exciting project. We are one of 3 towns in the Far North to be included in a trial safety programme called Innovative Streets, with thanks to Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency and Far North District Council. The aim over the next 5 months is to involve the community in ideas and outcomes on temporary safety measures trialed on SH1 Gillies Street. These s

afety and amenity trials aim improve safety and ease of use for our busy town and community. We have a local project team coordinating public meetings, surveys, and the streetscape projects, with the support of safety engineers from FNDC and Waka Kotahi. We hope to keep information and updates here on this page and you can also message us any queries. We look forward to helping enhance our mainstreet safety for the benefits of of all users.

Kia ora Kawakawa,
just to note the street planter boxes/street furniture are being moved this week so Fulton Hogan/NZTA can start preparing road for major refurbishment work happening in early March. These night works will impact carparking and traffic flow. We are waiting on more details soon.
In the meantime thanks to volunteers from the business and community association for moving planters. Some will be repaired, some discarded and some replaced.
NZTA are also working on improved road marking/painting to better define road layout, and train way with Keteriki-BOIVRT
Thank you
