Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Hine will now seek endorsement from
Ngāti Te Ara and Ngāti Kopaki through a hapū vote.
The resolution is: That Ngā Hapū o Ngāti Hine endorse Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Hine to seek, hold, and protect
a Mandate on behalf of Ngā Hapū o Ngāti Hine for future Treaty negotiations with the Crown.

This hui will be facilitated by Rowena Tana and Suzie Hati-Scott.

VOTING PROCESS
The hapū will follow Te Tū o Ngāti Hine as the decision-making process.
There will be a seperate voting session for each hapū.
Voting methods may include:
Show of hands (in the whare)
Online voting (via meeting link)

* All hapū members can vote, whether you are registered with Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Hine or not.
* Uri who whakapapa to more than one hapū may vote at each relevant hapū hui.
* There will be no postal or special votes.
* Voting is for uri aged 16+.
* Identity will be verified on the day by the Kaumātua group.

ONLINE PARTICIPATION
* Online attendance is available - but you must pre-register.

* Online registration is open now and closes on the 15 September, 2026
* Voting packs will be emailed from between the 16 - 18 September, 2026
* Voting opens on Saturday 19 September 2026, 1pm and closes 24 September 2026, 5pm

Yesterday, Te Orewai and Ngāi Tai ki Kaikōu gathered at Kaikōu Marae for our mandate voting hui.

Surrounded by the history of our claims, the whare became a place of remembrance, reflection, and hope. The kōrero spoke of the harm, dispossession, and alienation our people have endured, while also reminding us of the resilience and strength that has carried our whānau through generations.

The kōrero was heartfelt, emotional, and powerful. It honoured our past while looking with purpose towards our future.

When it came time to vote, the message from the whare was clear. We support the resolution - with conditions. We have bottom lines - they are expressions of our values and expectations. They are a reminder that as we move forward together, we do so with integrity, unity, and an unwavering commitment to protecting the interests of our hapū, whenua, whanau and future generations.

The whare then voted unanimously in favour of the resolution.

To our Te Ara Tika team, thank you for your tireless commitment over many years. Your dedication to sharing the history of our claims, creating space for honest kōrero, and helping our people make informed decisions has been immense. This milestone reflects countless hours of mahi carried out with humility and aroha.

To the whānau of Kaikōu Marae, thank you for your generous manaakitanga. Your warm welcome and the beautiful kai shared together reminded us that while these conversations can be difficult, they are strengthened by the care we show one another.

This journey has never been about forgetting our past. It is about understanding it, honouring those who came before us, and ensuring our mokopuna inherit a stronger future.
