Project Parore

Project Parore Collaboratively working to improve water quality & biodiversity in the catchments of the Northern Tauranga Moana.

Project Parore is all about practical ecological restoration, enabling improvements in water quality, soil health, native habitats and biodiversity across the eight catchments of the northern Tauranga Harbour. We are striving for an engaged community that cares for and has a sense of pride in the environment in which they live. Landowners manage the ecosystems that provide livelihoods in a sustain

able way. Collaborative take action to restore and maintain the health of the land, water and native wildlife in their own backyards and shared public spaces. Parore is a native fish that used to be found in abundance around the estuaries within the harbour. Unfortunately, land development and the damage to waterways and water quality, has led to the progressive destruction of their home. Parore are vegetarians, and their grazing habits helped keep algal plants in check. The re-establishment of Parore habitat, and perhaps with it the natural control of sea lettuce, is one measure of the project’s eventual success.

How good are these early morning photos from the crew πŸ’š.

The majority of our plants are booked to be planted this winter. 🌱 We are still keen to see if we can help people with planting between Whakamarama and Waihi.
Planting season June until August. Some sites suitable for September planting depending on the season ahead.

Sing out with any questions or queries. 😊

More than 120 college students from the Bay of Plenty and Waikato converged on KWKiwi's Matahui Rd orchard today, to compete in timed horticulture and agriculture tasks.

It's the first time the Agri Futures Clash of the Colleges has been held in the BOP. Teams of four were tested on their skills, knowledge and teamwork across 16 different modules.

Here the students were tasked with planning a garden containing both food and native plants. They had six minutes to suss out how to best arrange a variety of species to optimise the growing conditions for each, including the placement of irrigation, and then explain their logic to the Kenna family judges.

Top marks to the kids who thought to take prevailing wind direction and sunlight as the trees grew into account!

Calling farmers and growers in our Tauranga Harbour catchments! We're co-hosting this Emergency Preparedness workshop with NZ Landcare Trust to give rural communities practical, hands‑on training to prepare for, respond to and bounce back from adverse events.

If the last three months are anything to go by, it's a timely and valuable opportunity.

Places are limited but it's free to attend. If you're keen, register at the link in the comments today. πŸ‘‡

The Project Parore base has been enriched with a large scale artwork. Lead artist, Marino Magee, and project assistant Maka Annandale, have both worked in our restoration crew. How cool to have them both back involved with their artistic skills. Beautiful mahi.

We celebrated the completion of the mural, with Marino sharing the story and meaning behind the elements of the artwork with assembled friends, whanau and supporters. We've positioned the mural facing the main road so everyone can get a glimpse.

We are very grateful to the amazing folk at Creative Bay of Plenty - Te Waka Auaha Toi whose funding made this possible and the generous team at Dulux for their quality paint.

Thank you to everyone who joined us last night.

This is an amazing event and we're stoked to be supporting it. We were gobsmacked by the number of possums caught last year: a win for our environment and a cool experience for the kids too. Can't wait to do it all again!

We had the pleasure of a visit to our base from the winner of our 'Guess how many trees' competition we ran at the Katikati A&P show. Wikitoria and her whanau were super keen to see our nursery and collect their prize in person. These amazing locals are into trees as much as we are, and know how to care for these specimens until planting season rolls around. In case you were wondering: there were 595 plants on the site at the show. Wikitoria made a very calculated estimate of 597! 🌱πŸͺ΄πŸŒ³πŸ‘πŸ˜

We 🩡 partnering with organisations that share our kaupapa, and the Powerco peeps have now worked on restoration planting with us on two different sites. Looking forward to what we do togther in 2026!

🌱 Did you know Powerco has a Replant for Tomorrow programme?

When trees grow too close to power lines, our vegetation crews sometimes need to remove them to keep the network safe and reliable. That’s where Replant for Tomorrow comes in - helping us support native planting projects across our network footprint.

Over the past five years, Replant for Tomorrow has helped us replant more than 20,000 native trees and shrubs - alongside some pretty incredible community groups, like Project Parore here in western Bay of Plenty.

Together, we’re planting natives where they’ll thrive, creating healthy habitats for birds and insects, and helping our local environments flourish.

Because, while we love trees… we just prefer them not growing too close to power lines (no one enjoys an unexpected power outage πŸ˜‰).

A huge thank you to our community partners who help make this possible - you’re growing a greener tomorrow with us πŸ’š
