Last week, TMBC held the Haerenga Taiao Field Trip where participants gathered to immerse themselves in Mātauranga Māori and explore pressing biosecurity topics at the Otāwhiwhi Marae in Bowentown. The event hosted several critical discussions, from Great White Shark Monitoring to the threat of Phytophthora agathidicida to Kauri forests. We also heard updates on the Asian paddle crab programme and an insightful presentation from TMBC Co-Chair, Carlton Bidois, on using maramataka as a Marine Management Framework.

This enriching event was a testament to the collaborative efforts of Otāwhiwhi Marae, Manaaki Te Awanui, and the TMBC Māori Caucus. A heartfelt thank you to our hosts and contributors for creating a day filled with connection, learning, and inspiration!

This Conservation Week, I’m outlining my four clear priorities for boosting the Department of Conservation’s ability to protect and enhance our precious natural taonga for future generations.

4/4 - Fixing concession processes. We will reduce red tape to make it easier for businesses, researchers and others to undertake activities on Public Conservation Land.

✅Target investment in high-value conservation outcomes
✅Generate new revenue and recalibrate costs
✅Strengthen relationships with Iwi/hapū and others for better conservation outcomes
✅Fix concession processes

📸 Great to visit Te Tai o Aorere and Abel Tasman National Park to check out work on the Great Walk earlier this year.
