Firstly, we want to acknowledge and thank everyone for the incredible tautoko we received today. A huge shout out to all the whānau who came along — it meant a lot to stand together through this process.

At this stage, the outcome of the hearing is a wait-and-see. Due to the complexity of the case, the Judge has indicated that further time is needed to carefully consider everything that was presented today. So we will know more in the next couple of months.
Safe trip home whanau🌿

Kia ora,

I support the High Court appeal seeking to have the Carrington Estate resource consents considered lapsed.

More than 20 years have passed since these consents were granted, and the environment and local community have changed significantly in that time. I believe any development of this scale should require new consents that properly reflect current environmental, cultural, and community conditions.

I support the hau kāinga of Haititaimarangai Marae, Te Whānau Moana and Te Rorohuri standing to protect the whenua, wai, kaimoana, and future of the rohe.

Ngā mihi,

Kia ora koutou e te whānau,

We need your tautoko at the upcoming Court appeal concerning Carrington Estate development in Whatuwhiwhi aka Karikari Peninnsula rohe.

10:00am on Wednesday 13th May 2026 at the High Court located at 24 Waterloo Quadrant, Auckland Central, Auckland1010.

What’s it about?
Local Council granted resource consents for a BIG development in1999.

Those consents allowed Carrington to:
-Build 382 villas (3-bedroom);
-Build a 20-bedroom traveller accommodation;
-Build 150 hotel units;
-Create hundreds of carparks;
-Under take earthworks and landscaping associated with the above.

To date Carrington has built 16 villas and 10 hotel units since it got the resource
consents. As over 20 years has passed, we are asking the Environment Court to say the consents have lapsed-that means Carrington will have to get new consents (if it is not allowed under Council’s plan, which was addressed in August 2025 and is yet to be decided).

The Environment Court decided not to say the consents had lapsed, so we appealed that decision to the High Court!!

Why do we care?
If developed:
a) tourists would out number haukainga and the residential population.
b) tourism could see a rise in fishing, kaimoana collection and pollution.

This will impact what is available for haukainga to live on; Carrington previously indicated it would need wastewater consents and the only place for wastewater to go is to Waimango, which flows to Karikari; which could result in puna being pierced and disrupted during earthworks (some whānau rely on puna connections remaining to source water) the current resource consents do not allow for
haukainga to have a say or presence in the construction or operation phases.

The environment has changed over the last 20 years and Waimango has become unwell. Kaimoana has depleted; lots of different people now live within our rohe.
Our kararehe such as manu and mokomoko that live within Carrington are vulnerable to extinction. Because of the resource consents that were granted so long ago, the development doesn’t account for any of these changes.

Nau mai haere mai whānau

Since the very first Māori Women’s Welfare League conference in 1951, wāhine from the Far North have helped lead the way. From Kaitaia to Ahipara, leaders like Meremere Petricevich and Muriwai Popata stood at the heart of the kaupapa championing hauora, te reo, mātauranga, and the birth of kōhanga reo.

On Wednesday 1 Oct we are hosting the MWWL National Conference at Te Rangi Aniwaniwa.
