🛑 Protect Waipiro Bay: Say NO to the Fast-Tracked 250-Vessel Marina, Sign and Share the petition to ALL community groups.
🗓️URGENT! The petition closes on 10 May to meet the fast-track deadline.
🚨 What’s Happening?
A 250-berth marina is proposed for Waipiro Bay under the Fast-Track Approvals Act 2024 (Application FTA229).
We strongly oppose it.
❌ Why We Say NO:
• Fails the Requirements: Doesn’t meet requirements under the Fast-Track Act or the RMA.
• No Public Voice: This fast-tracked process shuts out the community.
• Fails the Criteria: No proven regional or national benefit. The site is an aquaculture exclusion zone.
• Distorts Demand: Marinas nearby (like Opua) have vacant berths. No need for more.
• Ignores Māori Rights and interests: Disrespects the interests of local hapū and iwi through Treaty settlements and customary practices (Fast Track Act, Section 7).
⚠️ What's Missing?
The application lacks:
• ❌ Ecological Survey
• ❌ Hydrology Survey
• ❌ Cultural Impact Assessment
• ❌ Proper Environmental Effects Assessment (AEE)
• ❌ Proper community engagement and input
🌊 What’s at Risk?
• Loss of public marine space to privatisation
• Destruction of taonga species & habitats
• Wiping out customary food gathering areas
• Irreversible cultural and ecological harm

• Decline the Fast-Track application
• Refer it to the standard consent process for public input
• Let our community be heard
• Protect our Bay for future generations
