Patrol residential, business and industrial areas to deter or identify criminal activity
Report signs of suspicious activity
Gather information for police through note taking and recording
Assist in accidents and crime scenes
Watch out for stolen

vehicles and other property reported as stolen
Watch out for missing and wanted persons
Assist the public at community events including crowd control
We normally cover the area from the Ashley River to the Waimakariri which Includes
Waikuku, Woodend, Ravenswood, Pegasus, Kaiapoi, Ohoka, Clarkville and any other area when directed by the Police which can include Amberley or Oxford. We are eyes and ears for the police and are out there to make our communities a safer
place. As well as patrolling we monitor CCTV cameras and also attend community events. Currently we have 18 members of which 5 are life members. These five have achieved 31 years, 30 years, 26 years and 2 at 20 years. We are always looking for new members for patrolling and camera operation. All new recruits have to be vetted by the Police before joining. If you are interested in joining the Kaiapoi Community Patrol please email your details to
[email protected] and we will contact you. What sort of experience do you need? You will be required a full driver’s license and have a basic knowledge of the area. You will learn different places and areas as training progresses. All other aspects of patrolling will be achieved through training which will include 10 modules they must do in their first 3 months. There are further training sessions held during the year.

If you’re getting ready to travel and your windscreen is foggy, here’s the fastest way to clear it:

• Turn your demister on.
• Turn your air conditioning to full strength at its hottest temperature.
• Turn circulating air off.
• Open the windows by a few centimetres, even if only for 20–30 seconds.

You should turn circulating air off because cold air from outside will clear fog faster than recirculated air in your car, which is already hot and has already absorbed some condensation.

In other words, cold and dry air is better than warm and moist air.

The circulating air symbol looks like a car with a U-shaped arrow in it – turn it off.

Opening the windows just a little will help clear the humid air inside, replacing it with colder air from outside. This speeds up the process a bit but it's a nice-to-have – sometimes it'll be raining, or just really cold outside.

If you’re not sure what your demister looks like, its symbol looks like three arrows pointing up at a curved rectangle. In most modern vehicles this symbol will be on a button you can turn on or off, but in older vehicles it may be a setting you need to select using a dial.

We've all seen people driving around with a foggy windscreen, and with foggy windows too. It's illegal to drive with a foggy windscreen (under section 8.8 of the Land Transport (Road User) Rule), so clear your windscreen and keep it clear as you’re travelling.

When the weather is bad, always check our pages to see if state highways are affected before you travel. Follow us if you aren’t already. You can find more information in this post: https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1HJqwn4Sxa/

Don't let a notification be your last distraction 📵

If you’re in the car, leave the phone alone. There is no text, email, post or call that is so important to risk your life and everybody else’s life around you.

In 2025 we lost 272 people on our roads, with four being lost over Easter.

When getting behind the wheel, consider how your actions can change the lives of people in an instant.

Make good choices. Put that seatbelt on. You don’t need to drink and drive. Drive distraction free (yes that means putting your phone down. Plan your journey so you don’t have to hurry anywhere.

Any of these will improve the chances of you arriving at your destination safely.
