Tuahiwi is the home of Ngāi Tūāhuriri in North Canterbury. The takiwā of Te Ngāī Tūāhuriri Rūnanga centres on Tuahiwi and extends from the Hurunui River to the Hakatere River and inland to the main divide. Our whare, Maahunui takes its name from the canoe or our shared ancestor, Māui-tikitiki-a-Te Raka. Maahunui ll, our new whare, opened in 2012 is a contemporary purpose built complex designed to

meet the needs of our Tuahiwi people. A hirable facility, Maahunui ll is a wonderful community resource.

RĀHUI - Ngāi Tūāhuriri Customary Whitebait Season 2026

Kia ora tātou.

Please find attached a letter from our Upoko, Runanga Chair and Tangata Tiaki Committee Chair regarding the customary whitebait season. A decision has been made to place a rāhui / temporary pause on our season in order for us to address a number of matters that have arisen over the last 5 years. We would like to thank everyone who contributed to our end-of-season hui last year where these matters were raised for our attention. This decision was not made lightly, and it is grounded in the need for us to act collectively as a hapū in matters of tikanga and rangatiratanga.

Please take the time to read the letter carefully. We will be back in touch when we have a plan to progress the work required to re-start our customary whitebait season.
