We had a great day celebrating Youth Week at the Expo in the Invercargill Mall yesterday. The CAB Youth Tool Kete (youth.cab.org.nz) was the focus with lots of rangatahi playing the board game and learning more about information on the site. A big thanks to The Warehouse for providing prizes and to our volunteers for helping out on their Sunday😊

🌟 Celebrating Rangatahi this Youth Week 🌟

Youth Week is all about celebrating the incredible contributions young people make to our communities across Aotearoa — simply by being themselves. Their energy, ideas, creativity, and passion help shape the world around us every day. ✨🌏

At Volunteer South we’re passionate about supporting the next generation of volunteers by creating meaningful opportunities for rangatahi to get involved, build confidence, develop skills, and make a real impact in their communities. 🤝💡🌱

To all the amazing young volunteers out there — thank you for the mana, enthusiasm, and fresh perspectives you bring to our communities 💙

And to community organisations: now is a great time to think about projects, events, or roles that could benefit from the energy and talents of young volunteers. If you have opportunities for rangatahi to get involved, we’d love to hear from you! 📣

UPDATE ON FUNDING CUT TO WELLINGTON CABs: We are devasted at the decision made today at the Wellington City Council’s Grants Committee meeting to approve the cut in funding for our Wellington CABs.

Citizens Advice Bureau Wellington’s vital service of information, advice and support reaches over 11,000 people throughout the city every year. With the impacts of the high cost of living, continuing cuts to the public service and further job loss in the city, the support the CAB provides to the community is becoming more critical than ever.

Our CABs need every cent of the approximately $230,000 per annum they have been receiving from Council to support Wellingtonians. Yet today the Council slashed that funding to just $100,000. This puts at risk the survival of the CAB service in Wellington. It has been done with very little notice – just a few working days - and no robust rationale. We are reeling from what has been done to our Wellington CABs and the way it has been done.

We are going to fight this because it is not right and it cannot stand.

We will need your help in this. Please watch this space.

GROWING PUSH BACK ON FUNDING CUTS TO WELLINGTON CABs: Messages from Wellingtonians and people around the motu are flooding in to us, expressing their dismay at the decision taken yesterday by Wellington City Council to slash funding to our Wellington CABs by over half, putting their survival at risk. People are asking us what they can do to help reinstate Citizens Advice Bureau Wellington funding so that our CABs can continue providing their vital service to the people of Wellington. People are desperate to help.

We are incredibly heartened, and humbled, by your responses.

We will be coming back to you soon with opportunities and suggestions for things you can do to help us get back the funding our Wellington CABs need to continue the amazing work they do in the community – the money required for continuing to provide some physical spaces where people can come for in-person help, and for a handful of staff to provide the support that enables our 125 Wellington CAB volunteers to deliver a quality service to the community. Watch this space.

We are also really pleased that the media are recognising the significance of the decision that was made at the Wellington City Council Grants Committee meeting yesterday to continue with the cut to our Wellington CABs’ funding. Kerry Dalton, Chief Executive of Citizens Advice Bureau NZ, was interviewed by Lisa Owen of RNZ's Checkpoint today. You can listen to the interview here:
