Today marks the beginning of Volunteer Awareness Week, and at Hospice South, its a chance for us to recognise and celebrate the incredible people who give their time to support our community.

We are fortunate to have over 450 volunteers across our organisation. From our retail shops and kitchen to our Day programme, Biographers, cleaners and Fundraisers - our volunteers are part of everything we do.

Hospice care isn't just one moment of help - its a continuous presence for patients and their whanau.

Our Volunteers are the heart of that presence, showing up in ways both big and small, every single day.

This week, we'll be sharing just a glimpse of the impact they make.

With you, every step of the way.

Behind every great community are people like Linda Howard, this week’s ASB Good as Gold recipient.

For more than a decade, Linda has brought Southland together through creative fundraising events supporting Hospice South, generously giving her time, skills, and energy to countless community causes.

Most recently, Linda organised the hugely successful Stars in Their Eyes show, which raised more than $20,000 to support Hospice South services in our community. Her dedication, passion, and ability to inspire others continue to make a lasting difference to the lives of Southlanders.

Congratulations Linda – a truly deserving recipient of this recognition.

Today our Hospice South Day Programme celebrated King's Birthday in true royal style, with plenty of laughter, memories, and shared stories.

We were incredibly fortunate to have our very own Suzanne Prentice join us to speak about her personal royal experiences. Suzanne captivated everyone with stories from her encounters with members of the Royal Family and brought along her CNZM and OBE medals for a special show-and-tell session. Adding to the royal atmosphere, she also introduced everyone to her much-loved Paddington Bear, who proved to be a very popular guest for the occasion!

While the day was filled with celebration, it was also a time of reflection. We took a moment to remember one of our much-loved Day Programme attendees, Gerald, who recently passed away. A candle was lit in his memory, and together we shared stories and memories of the friendship and warmth he brought to our Day Programme family.

Our thoughts remain with Gerald's family and friends as we remember him with great fondness.

We’re feeling incredibly proud of our Hospice South whānau

Our amazing Queenstown Hospice Shop volunteer, Ella Wilson, has been recognised on the national stage, receiving a King’s Service Medal (KSM) from Cindy Kiro at an investiture in Wellington.

For over 10 years, Ella has been a valued part of our team, bringing warmth, dedication, and that signature outlook: “tiredness is a state of mind.”
Alongside her time with us, she’s given decades of service to her community through organisations like Plunket, the Queenstown Lakes Baby Box Charitable Trust, and Showbiz Queenstown.

Of all her achievements, it’s the friendships she’s made along the way that mean the most - and we think that says everything about the kind of person she is.

Ella, you are an inspiration, and a beautiful reflection of the heart of our volunteer team.

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us today for our Pink Morning Tea across Hospice South and our Day Programme – it was a sea of pink, laughter, and generosity.

From the delicious pink-themed treats to the fabulous outfits, it was wonderful to see staff, patients, and visitors come together in support of the Breast Cancer Foundation NZ
Thanks to the wonderful organisation of RN Rebecca Todd, we’re proud to share that together we raised over $700, all going directly to support the incredible work of the Breast Cancer Foundation NZ across Aotearoa.

Whether you turned up, dressed up, brought a plate, helped set up, or donated – Thankyou!

And of course, a special mention to our very own Brenda for letting us celebrate her birthday in true Pink Ribbon style (cake and attention included!).

As part of Hospice Awareness Week, today we recognise the incredible impact of our Hospice South volunteer talent.

Last financial year, our Hospice South volunteers gave a remarkable 46,578 hours to support our community.

That’s an average of 127 hours every single day - generously given with heart to support our patients, families, staff, and wider community.

Behind every hour is a person choosing to show up and make a difference - in our shops, kitchen and facilities, day programme, gardens, biography service, and so much more.

Take a moment to meet some of the friendly faces behind those 46,578 hours - the people who help make our care possible every single day.
