Come with us for a day of track cutting along our Pouiatoa Trig Loop trapline.

This trapline has gotten a bit overgrown over the last year, so it was a job well overdue.

Every month, Aaron Chambers, our trustee and contractor, checks this 20km long trapline of about 97 DoC 200s and now 114 SA possum traps. Hopefully this new cutting will make it a little easier for him to get around!

Here is what introduced ungulates do to our native forests when left uncontrolled.

Taranaki is known to be one of the most heavily goat browsed regions in NZ. Ungulate game species such as goats, deer and pigs absolutely decimate forest areas when left uncontrolled. DOC contracts goat hunters in much of the DOC land around Taranaki to keep them in check and allow for forest regeneration, which is crucial work for our struggling forests.

Not only is controlling ungulates important for the long term survival of our forests, but it is also extremely important for ensuring a future home for our taonga species, including our beloved kōkako.

Check out this Kahakaha in fruit!

This endemic astelia or lily species (Astelia hastata) is an epiphyte meaning it lives on other native trees. The fruit is rich in nectar which is important for lots of different animals in the forest. The fruits were also traditionally a favourite for Māori kids exploring the ngahere.

They’re definitely one of the tastiest berries I have foraged in the bush!

We want to say a massive farewell to our most amazing general manager Kat!

Kat has been with us at ETEC for almost 6 years, first as conservation manager then taking over the general manager role in August 2024. Since then, she has been in charge of managing the team, reporting on our progress, and applying for funding here at ETEC. While also helping out in the field with trap lines, yearly toxin operations, and a few of the contracting jobs we have picked up over the years.

Kat is leaving us for greyer pastures in the UK, working for National Trust in the Lakes District, developing and implementing their restoration strategy and managing a team of over 20 people.

Ever wondered how kiwi on transmitter are found? Here’s a bit of an explanation of how we locate and catch the birds for their yearly transmitter change out in the eastern hill country.

Apologies for the mistake, the telemetry gear is actually a TR4 and not an AR4

What a day! 🎉🏃‍♀️🌿

The McDonald Real Estate Adventure Run at Everett Park on Sunday 10 May was a fantastic success, with 160 participants and 15 officials coming together for a fun, safe, and community-filled day out. Even better — no injuries, no incidents, and the tracks are still in great condition!

From little legs tackling 2.5km, to runners turning the 9km (ish) course into an 11km adventure 😅, the day was packed with epic effort, laughter, and achievement.
A huge thank you to everyone who participated, volunteered, supported, and sponsored the event. It was awesome to see so many families out enjoying Everett Park in beautiful weather, while supporting the Oakura Volunteer Fire Brigade, Blood Cancer NZ, and ETEC’s ongoing conservation work protecting taonga species in Everett Park and the Pouiatoa Conservation Area. 💚

We want to acknowledge Event lead Kat Strang for establishing the course and event that we aim to run again next year. Massive thanks to our sponsors and supporters:

Celebrating conservation week last week - the future's looking bright.

Thanks to these legends, Allan and Mike. As well as volunteering for ETEC to manage pests in Everett Park, they spent time this Conservation week passing on practical knowledge to young leaders from Waitoriki School, supported by DOC, WITT, Todd Energy, Te Iho Wai, Te Ara Taiao, Pukerangiora Hapū and ETEC.

Thanks to Otaraua Hapū for the beautiful rākau.

We wanted to recognise the mahi done by the amazing Mansell's family!

The Mansell’s have been checking traplines with the trust for 18 years. At first, the traps were being checked by the ‘A team’ - Alice, Anna, Aaron, Alex and Alan. Since the kids have grown up and moved on, Claudia and Andrew have taken over all the mahi for a number of years.

Now, the time has come for the family to move out of the area and hand over their traplines. We want to give a big mihi to them for all their hard mahi!
