🚜 CHECK BEFORE YOU START! HAVE YOU CHECKED WHERE BIRDS MAY HAVE NESTED? 🐦

As we head into the warmer months, birds are busy building nests β€” and machinery can provide some unexpected nesting spots.

Before starting your tractor, ride-on mower, farm machinery or other equipment, take a moment to check for nests.

πŸ”Ž Check under bonnets and around engines
🌾 Look for nests in machinery, sheds and equipment
🐣 Be mindful of eggs and nesting birds
πŸ”₯ Remove accumulated dry grass and vegetation where safe to do so

Dry grass and nesting material around hot engine components can create a potential fire hazard.

A quick check before starting could prevent a fire and protect our local wildlife.

Take a minute. Check before you start.

🌱 LET’S KEEP SPRING CLEAN! 🌿

Spring Cleaning? It’s a great time to get your property cleaned up and reduce potential fire risks before the warmer, drier months arrive.

🌿 Clear away dead vegetation
πŸ‚ Remove dry leaves, branches and other green waste
🏑 Keep vegetation around buildings under control
πŸ”₯ Reduce the amount of fuel that could feed a fire

A tidy property is a safer property β€” and a few simple jobs now can make a big difference later.

πŸš’ Daytime response takes all sorts.

People with flexible hours. Shift workers. Parents. Retirees. Business owners. Work-from-home locals.

If you live or work close to Hikurangi Fire Brigade and could respond when needed, we’re keen to hear from you.

You don’t need to fit a certain mould β€” what matters is being part of the community and being there when your neighbors need help.

πŸ”₯ Could volunteering fit into your day? Come along and find out what’s involved.

πŸš’ COULD WE GET TO YOU IN AN EMERGENCY?

One simple thing can make a big difference when every second counts β€” make sure your property is clearly numbered and easy to identify.

πŸ“ Is your house number visible from the road?
πŸŒ™ Can it be seen at night?
🌿 Is it hidden by trees, hedges or vegetation?
πŸš’ Can emergency crews quickly identify your driveway?

In an emergency, we don't want to waste valuable time looking for the right property.

Take a look at your property today β€” could we find you quickly?

πŸ”₯ Clear numbers. Clear access. Faster response.

πŸš’ HELP US KEEP HYDRANTS CLEAR! πŸ’§

These photos from training last night show just how easily a fire hydrant can become covered and hidden by grass and vegetation.

When we’re called to a fire, every second counts. Crews need to be able to quickly locate, access and connect to hydrants β€” especially when a reliable water supply is critical.

🌱 Please check the hydrant near your property:
Keep grass and vegetation trimmed around it
Make sure it isn't covered or buried
Keep vehicles, trailers and other items clear
Make sure crews can easily see and access it

πŸš’ A hydrant we can't find or access can cost valuable time when every second matters.
Take a few minutes this week to check your local hydrant and help us keep our community fire-ready.

Know where your nearest hydrant is? Keep it clear!

⏰ As daylight saving approaches, we want you to check your smoke alarms

Every second person who dies in a house fire is over 60 🚨

To give yourself and your older family, friends and neighbors the earliest possible warning, you need smoke alarms installed in every bedroom, hallway and living area.

One of the most commonly overlooked places for a smoke alarm is the bedroom. When you’re asleep, you can’t smell smoke, but smoke alarms can and they’ll wake you up if a fire gets started – so you can get out fast.

βœ… Test your smoke alarms by pressing the red button
βœ… Check they're less than 10 years old
βœ… Install alarms in every bedroom, hallway and living area
