In response to the pressure, we've all seen on the Lake Hāwea Community since fuel prices increased, Community Link Upper Clutha is bringing their Foodbank service to our community.

What to expect:
Temporary food support for people going through difficult times.
🍅Food parcels will be premade – please contact Nicola Plumridge at [email protected] to arrange your parcel to be ready for collection from the Lake Hāwea Community Centre, at no cost.

During the first 2 weeks Nicola will get an idea of what other services people may need and respond accordingly.

It's a bit of a tradition around here.

It's that time of year again! Hāwea's famous Bonfire Night! Mark it in the diaries Friday 22 May starting at 5pm. With fireworks at 7pm! So please don't bring your wee furry friends as it will get very loud.
We will be down by the Dam again this year, so maybe walk down if you are able, as the parking is limited.
We will have the Lions ready with Sausage and Chips, the committee with Mugs of soup and cheese rolls for $5 and Sweet Spot Hāwea for your yummy desert needs.
Bring a chair, picnic and some marshmallows for the fire and join us for a classic Hāwea get together!

We are currently exploring pop-up services from Community Link Upper Clutha, to make help more accessible to Hāwea residents.
In the meantime, checkout this opportunity at the Community Hub, to help with tax time.
Spaces are limited.

Tax time can bring plenty of questions for individuals, businesses and even community organisations, so this is a great opportunity to get free face to face advice and information from IRD right here in Wānaka.

IRD will be at Community Link next Wednesday 20th May, from 9:30am - 1pm offering support with anything tax related:
• Personal and business tax
• Student loans
• Child support
• Family tax credits

Whether you’re preparing your tax return, unsure about entitlements, or just want to ask a few questions, book a time to chat with the IRD team. Appointments are 30 minutes.

The buoy’s mooring system has already been installed, and the buoy itself is now in the final stages of testing. Over the next few months, it will be attached to the mooring and begin collecting data as part of the Otago Regional Council’s wider lake monitoring programme.

The buoy will capture near real time information about the lake, including:
💧Water oxygen levels — measures the "breathable" air in the water.
💧Phytoplankton (algae) growth — tracks the tiny floating plants at the base of the food chain. This is a key indicator of lake health, as changes in the levels of these algae can provide early warning of degradation and reflect shifts in the lake’s overall productivity.
💧Water temperature — monitors the lakes pulse; to see how seasonal changes and climate affect the underwater environment.
💧 Conductivity — gauges how well water carries an electric current, which helps
scientists spot dissolved salts or pollutants.

This information will help ORC's scientists monitor changes in the lake over time, supporting effective lake management.

Once the buoy is live, you’ll be able to find this information on the Environmental Data Portal: orc.govt.nz/edportal

Can you spare 30 mins?
This is a great opportunity to get involved in citizen science while helping to protect and care for Lake Hāwea.

During the clean‑up, collected rubbish will be sorted and recorded in the national Litter Intelligence database, contributing valuable data to better understand litter sources and trends across Aotearoa.

Community Link Upper Clutha want to help with rising fuel pressures, and to link Lake Hawea to Wanaka with another shuttle trial during peak times.
Have you got a minute for another quick survey?

Exploring a Peak‑Time Community Shuttle

We’ve been hearing more and more from locals that getting around is getting harder and more expensive. Rising fuel costs and limited public transport options are putting real pressure on budgets, including people travelling to and from work.
So, Community Link is exploring the idea of a peak‑time shuttle between Hāwea, Albert Town and Wānaka and we want to hear from you.
If a reliable, affordable shuttle was available at peak times, would you use it? Even if you’re not sure yet, your feedback will help us understand what’s needed and whether this service could make a real difference.
👉 Have your say by completing our short survey, https://tinyurl.com/jfaprmz9
📅 Survey closes Sunday 10 May

If the response is positive, we’ll be looking to get this up and running in the coming weeks.

Please share this with friends, whānau, or workmates who travel regularly between Hawea and Albert Town and Wanaka. The more voices we hear, the better we can respond.
