We're heading to Fieldays tomorrow.

The Southern Hemisphere's largest agricultural event kicks off at Mystery Creek, Hamilton from 10 to 13 June, and wool will have a strong presence across two sites.

You'll find the Wool Alliance at site D70 in the Rural Advocacy Hub, where Campaign for Wool NZ and Wool Impact will be talking about the future of the strong wool industry. Come and share your experiences, your ideas and your opinions about where the industry is heading. We want to hear from growers and industry people directly.

And just to make things extra fun, we'll also have a presence at the MPI site in the main pavilion.

The team on the ground across the four days includes Campaign for Wool NZ GM Kara Biggs, and the Wool Impact duo of Ross McIsaac and Gretchen Foster, who would all love a kōrero. Whether you're a grower, an industry professional or just wool-curious, come find us.

Site D70, Rural Advocacy Hub. See you there.

Two winners will each score a pair of Norsewear Work Socks, made right here in NZ from quality wool.

To enter, tag us in your photo on Instagram or Facebook, or email your shots to [email protected]. Images must be taken in New Zealand.

A good story about wool isn't enough anymore. Global markets want proof.

That's the central finding from Nuffield Scholar Lisa Portas, who travelled through the US, UK and Europe researching what separates wool businesses that are winning from those still waiting for the commodity cycle to turn.

The answer isn't better marketing. It's certification, verified data, and supply chains built around purpose - not volume.

Buyers want to trace the fibre. They want emissions data. They want evidence that what they're sourcing matches the values they're selling to consumers. If that evidence doesn't exist, many won't even start the conversation.

The good news is that NZ wool already has the underlying credentials. Our farming systems produce exactly what global buyers are looking for. The gap is in the systems around wool - the verification, the traceability, the long-term supply relationships that turn a good product into a premium one.

With markets demanding evidence, not anecdotes, the sector must supply certification and credible data to earn its premium, writes Lisa Portas.

Do you know what's inside your mattress?

Most standard mattresses are packed with synthetic foam, chemical flame retardants and polyester fibres. They can release chemicals into the air, they trap heat, and when they're done they sit in landfill for a very long time. For something you spend a third of your life on, that's worth thinking about.

Wool does the opposite. It regulates temperature naturally, wicks moisture away from the body, resists mould and dust mites, and contains no synthetic additives. Better sleep, and a better choice for the planet.

If you are in the market for a new mattress, you have GOT to check out:

🛌🏻 Comfi makes wool mattresses right here in Aotearoa, using New Zealand strong wool alongside NZ-made foam and pocket spring technology. Our first online bed store with a social purpose, they believe that a good night’s sleep should be accessible to everyone, especially those who are most vulnerable. To that end, every 5 beds they sell, they donate a brand new high quality mattress to a Kiwi family in need.

🛌🏻 Dreamwool Beds has been handcrafting wool mattresses in Christchurch since 1934, and has been in the Henderson family for over 50 years. As a niche bed company, every Dreamwool mattress is made to order, with fewer than 500 handcrafted beds made each year. They craft each luxury bed using 100% Merino wool sourced from carefully selected South Island farms and natural charcoal-infused latex, keeping you cooler, drier and sleeping deeper.

Just another two kiwi companies making mattresses that are better for you, your family and the planet.

A beautiful woolly collaboration

Davaar and Sylvester.pg have just launched a limited edition knitwear collection, and it's exactly the kind of thing we love to see. A fifth-generation Southland sheep station and one of NZ's most respected fashion houses, coming together over a shared belief in craft, family and making things that last.

The collection features two knitwear pieces rooted in Davaar founder Kate Macdonald's family heritage, reimagined with a distinctive Sylvester design signature. The wool is sourced directly at Davaar Station and the garments are made entirely in NZ, traceable from farm to finished piece.

It's a collaboration that bridges rural and urban NZ in the best possible way, and the results are gorgeous.

Head to Davaar's journal for the full story, and follow Davaar and Sylvester.pg for all the details.

It's a limited edition collection, so we suggest you get inter-webbing (it's a word) sooner rather than later!

Most New Zealand wool never makes it to your wardrobe

People know wool as something you wear. A jumper, a pair of socks, a good coat. But that's only part of the story.

The majority of NZ wool goes into the things that make a house a home. Strong wool, the hard-wearing cousin of fine wool, ends up as the carpet under your feet, the insulation in your walls, the rug in the lounge, the mattress you sleep on, the acoustic panels absorbing noise in offices and schools. Even the felt used in pianos.

Strong wool is everywhere, doing things most people never think to credit it for. Keeping rooms warm, absorbing sound, filtering air, resisting mould and flame. All without shedding microplastics or ending up in landfill for centuries.

It's not a niche material. It's one of the most widely used natural fibres in the world, and we just happen to grow some of the best of it.

Gifts that are good for little ones and good for the planet too.

Wool toys are soft, durable, non-toxic and free from the plastic bits that end up in landfill or the ocean. They're made to last, which means less waste and more play.

If you have a gift to buy in the not too distant future, step away from the plastic fantastic and have a look at these gorgeous options:

Fairplay Earth Acorn Babies by Papoose Toys are tiny hand-felted wool figures tucked into a hand-stitched oak leaf pouch, perfect for small hands and big stories

Woolkin Boulder the Dump Truck is built from NZ wool and FSC-certified timber, a chunky and bold toy made for kids who like things that actually do something

Chasing Whimsies Thicketwhisper Inn is a hand-crafted felted gnome home made from 100% NZ wool felt under fair-trade conditions, with a removable mushroom roof and enough magic to keep imaginations busy for hours
sumner Heart Stems are hand-felted NZ wool hearts on wire stems, coming in bunches of five or twelve and perfect for brightening up a bedroom shelf, wrapping on a gift or popping in a vase

Follow each of these makers for more woolly goodness, and head to our partners directory at nzwool.co.nz to see the full list of businesses working with wool.

Said no space agency ever.

Most people think of strong wool and picture a carpet or a blanket. Fair enough. But NZ wool also turns up in places you'd never expect, including filtration systems on NASA's Artemis mission to the moon, thanks to Kiwi company Lanaco.

That's not a one-off either. Strong wool is used in acoustic panels, geotextiles, building insulation and technical filtration. It's been quietly doing serious work in serious places for a long time.

The reason is the same whether you're furnishing a lounge or building a spacecraft. Wool is non-toxic, naturally filters pollutants, handles temperature and moisture well, and doesn't break down into harmful particles. It just works.

So no, strong wool isn't stuck in the past. It's one of the most technically capable fibres on the planet, and we happen to grow some of the best of it right here in Aotearoa.
