Big Brothers Big Sisters Hawkes Bay One Hour. Once a Week. One Life. Big Brothers Big Sisters makes a difference in young people's lives. Are you interested in becoming a Big Brother or Big Sister?

There is no more important investment we as individuals can make than in helping our community’s rangatahi realise, and share, their full potential. To help them raise their head to face the world, with a smile on their face. MATAWHĀNUI / MISSION

HAKATAKANGA / VISION
Kia eke noa a Taiohi
All Taiohi/Young People realise their full potential. WHAT WE DO
Big Brothers Big Sisters is a youth mentoring programme which has been operating worldwide since 1904, and in Hawke’s Bay since 2006. Big Brothers Big Sisters Hawke’s Bay matches young people with Mentors to form meaningful friendships that can make a big impact over time. In Hawke's Bay, we have matched over 100 young people with a Mentor. Mentors are adults from all walks of life who volunteer one hour a week of their time to form friendships with our taiohi, and help them discover a world of possibilities and opportunities. Anyone who is prepared to give one child, one hour of their time, once a week can be a Mentor. A Mentor:
- Provides a role model and a friend for a young person;
- Promotes the importance of school and healthy relationships with family and peers;
- Instils trusts and self-confidence in a young person, helping them to make healthy decisions;
- Encourages leadership skills and independent thinking, and;
- Makes a difference. Please contact us at [email protected], or phone: 022 175 2296

HOW THE PROGRAMME WORKS
Mentoring is simply about walking alongside another, letting a young person know they are valued and not alone. The young people in our community only need someone to take an interest in them, to listen to what they have to say and to help them come to terms with life’s challenges. We match a volunteer adult with a young person (aged anywhere between 6 to 11 years old) who could benefit from having a one-on-one relationship with a role model outside their immediate whānau. Young people and Mentors can stay matched until the young person turns 18 years old. Through regular outings, a relationship is developed between the Mentor and the Mentee. This is built on trust and common interests, and is supported by our experienced team. The result is a life-changing experience for both the Mentor and the Mentee. A recent review overwhelmingly confirms that the Big Brothers Big Sisters programme benefits the young people of Hawkes Bay. Children who spend time with a Mentor gain confidence, acquire new skills and competencies, and develop an enhanced capacity to care for others. COMMUNITY SUPPORT

“Witnessing the transformation of a child into a confident, concerned and motivated young person is a remarkable thing. Ushering them into adulthood, seeing them grow into a successful, responsible member of their community and society at large is even more satisfying. Proudly, it’s something our staff, volunteers and donors help bring about every day, and we’re very grateful for their generosity and support.”

Earlier this month, three of our matches were very excited to join Mr Apple for a site visit of their cool store.

Mr Apple has been a BBBS match sponsor since 2022, and has recently not only renewed their annual sponsorship, but increased their support to sponsor four matches!!!! We are incredibly grateful for their generosity and commitment.

It was clear that the sponsored matches had an amazing experience. Thank you to the entire Mr Apple team for making it such a successful day.

We had the privilege of attending the Volunteer Hawke's Bay Awards and supporting our amazing finalist nominee, Marie.

💜 Waitlist Wednesday 💜

This week, we have two amazing young girls, aged 11 and 9, who are waiting to be matched with a positive female mentor.
Could you spare just one hour a week to make a real difference in a young person's life?
🌟 Our 11-year-old loves drawing, gaming, swimming, bike riding, scootering, Bay Skate, walks, running, and all things crafty. She enjoys reading, going on hikes, visiting the aquarium, and treating herself to an ice cream adventure.
🌟 Our 9-year-old is full of energy and creativity. She loves dancing, productions, gymnastics, running, arts and crafts, reading, and following drawing tutorials. She also enjoys shooting netball goals, line dancing, and has a keen interest in fashion.

A mentor doesn't need to be extraordinary – just someone who is caring, reliable, and willing to spend time building a positive connection. Sometimes the smallest investment of time can have the biggest impact.
If you think you could be the perfect match for one of these wonderful girls, we'd love to hear from you.

Get in touch today to find out more about becoming a mentor.

A huge thank you to Patton Engineering!

Patton Engineering has been a valued partner and sponsor of Big Brothers Big Sisters Hawke's Bay since 2021, and we're delighted they have recently renewed their sponsorship for another year.

"The work your team does within our community is incredibly valuable," they told us. We're grateful for their ongoing support because we couldn't do what we do without businesses like Patton Engineering helping us make a difference for local young people.

Patton Engineering currently sponsors the match between Keegan and Mathias, who have been matched for more than two and a half years and are still going strong. Their friendship is a great example of the positive impact that mentoring relationships can have.

We were thrilled to welcome Brie back from to teach self-defence skills to a fantastic mixed group of our matches aged under 12 years.
Our taiohi learnt a range of practical tips and techniques to help keep themselves safe, while building confidence and having plenty of fun along the way. To top off a great evening, everyone enjoyed some well-earned pizza together!
A huge thank you to Brie for sharing her knowledge and making the session so engaging and enjoyable. We really appreciate your ongoing support and look forward to having you back again soon!

🚨 New Mentor Campaign – 10 Good Blokes 🚨

We’re on a mission to find 10 good blokes to step up and make a real difference. 💪

Our goal: 10 men signed up as mentors by July 2026.
Why? Because right now, over 70% of our waitlist are boys, and they’re waiting for someone like you.

Being a mentor doesn’t mean doing it alone. You can even take this journey as a couple - supporting each other while changing a young person’s life together.

This is where our community comes in 🤝
👉 Share this post
👉 Tag someone who’d make a great mentor
👉 Nominate a good bloke you know

If we reach this goal, it means 10 more boys gain a positive role model - someone who shows up, listens, and cares.

Let’s make it happen. 💙

🎉 Thankful Thursday 🎉

A huge congratulations to Keegan & Mathias, who won our Match Competition - a friendly challenge between our matches to see who could sell the most Grocery Grab raffle tickets!

Keegan went above and beyond, selling tickets outside Hastings New World (with Mathais's help), at the Farmers Market, and personally selling a huge number as well - selling a total of 56 tickets altogether! 🙌

As a thank you for their amazing effort, Keegan & Mathias got to enjoy a well-deserved goodie basket for winning the competition. 🎁

A big thank you to everyone who worked hard selling tickets for our Grocery Grab raffle fundraiser - including all of the other matches who got involved. We really appreciate all the time and effort that went into supporting this fundraiser! 💜

Every ticket sold helped Big Brothers Big Sisters Hawke's Bay continue supporting local young people through positive mentoring relationships.

A huge shout-out to Douglas - Outdoor & Textile Innovation for being a valued match sponsor with Big Brothers Big Sisters Hawke’s Bay!

They proudly sponsor Simon and Ollie, who have now been matched for two years and continue to build a strong, whānau-like connection. 💜

Over time they’ve really settled into their match, and their similar quiet, calm personalities make spending time together feel easy and natural. They enjoy having BBQ's with Simon’s whānau, spending time with his dogs, and baking. 😀

We truly couldn’t do what we do without our generous sponsors and amazing mentors, so a big thank you all round for helping make these life-changing relationships possible. 💜

If you or your business would like to become a sponsor, or if you’re interested in becoming a mentor, we’d love to hear from you. Get in touch and be part of something that really makes a difference in our community. ✨
