Indian Cultural Society - Waikato Inc.

Indian Cultural Society - Waikato Inc. ICSWI was formed in 1990. The formation
Indians have been living in New Zealand for over 100 years. They set out to carry this task.

The aim of the society is to foster the advancement of Indian tradition, language and literature and also to promote and develop multiculturalism philosophy influencing activities and structures within NZ society. In the 1980s, there were far fewer people of Indian descent in the Waikato. There were a number of Indian organisations, each celebrating Diwali in their own group, usually at a communit

y or school halls. The idea of celebrating Diwali together in the Waikato, was initiated by Pankaj Duggal, Indar Singh and Rakesh Jogia. Others on the committee included Ashwin Gulab, Lester Silver, Amu Upreti, Ramend Charan, and Harbains Singh Randhawa. First meeting was at Clarance Street Community Centre. A stirring committee was formed to celebrate Diwali. Aswin Gulab was appointed interim chairman, Punkaj Duggal was responsible for producing Diwali program. The original name of the group was the Diwali Cultural Committee. Punjabis, Guajarati, Sri Lankan, Indo Fijians and Kerela communities were invited joined in. Society’s Name

In 1997 the Diwali Cultural Committee name was changed to Waikato Indian Cultural Committee. Before being incorporated in 2005 the name of the society was changed to Indian Cultural Society [Waikato] Inc. First Diwali
On October 21, 1990, the first annual Diwali Celebration was celebrated at the Founders Theatre, and has been celebrated every year since. Diwali celebration was an incredible time of excitement, when the whole community got together, the performers, the parents, the extended family & friends, the organisers and the amazing cooks headed by Indar Singh and his wife Prakash Kaur Singh. Food was distributed in the theatre foyer headed by Sachin Lal. Sharing delicious food has been a big part of the celebrations. Objective of the Society

From Hurt to Healing – Waikato Communities Come Together

This week, something truly meaningful happened in our Waikato community.
Leaders from Māori, Indian, and wider South Asian communities came together at a special hui at Trust Waikato — not just to talk, but to listen, understand, and move forward together in the spirit of unity and respect.
Organised by the Indian Cultural Society Waikato Inc., the hui created a safe and welcoming space for open kōrero, shared kai, and connection across cultures.
A powerful moment of the evening was the gifting of a pounamu named Te Aroha — a beautiful symbol of reconciliation, unity, and a shared commitment to stronger relationships going forward. 💚
This hui reminds us all that:
👉 We are stronger together
👉 Dialogue builds understanding
👉 Respect and unity can overcome any challenge
We extend our heartfelt thanks to all leaders and community members who participated in this important step forward for our region.
Together, we continue to build a future where cultures are celebrated, differences are respected, and communities stand united. 🌏

The 35th Waikato Diwali Mela 2025 is a large‑scale, not‑for‑profit, community‑led cultural event celebrating Diwali – the Festival of Lights. Delivered by the Indian Cultural Society Waikato Inc., the event’s core purpose is to bring communities together, promote cultural understanding, and celebrate diversity in Aotearoa New Zealand through a free, inclusive public festival.

First established 35 years ago, the Waikato Diwali Mela has grown from a small community gathering into one of the largest and longest‑running multicultural community events in the Waikato region. Its longevity reflects strong volunteer leadership, trusted community partnerships, and consistent public support. The event has become a recognised annual fixture on the Hamilton events calendar and a symbol of cross‑cultural connection.

The 2025 event took place on 18 October 2025 at Innes Common, Hamilton Lake, attracting more than 20,000 attendees, well exceeding the 3,000‑person threshold for this category. Entry was free, ensuring there were no financial barriers to participation. The public, open‑air lakeside venue supported accessibility, visibility, and integration with the wider community.
Event content focused on celebrating Indian and South Asian culture while remaining welcoming and educational for all audiences. Programming included:

Traditional and contemporary cultural dance performances
Live music and cultural stage presentations
Community storytelling and cultural symbolism related to Diwali
Cultural attire, crafts, and visual displays
Family‑friendly entertainment and community engagement activities

The audience represented a wide cross‑section of Waikato’s population, including families, young people, seniors, and visitors from diverse cultural backgrounds. While the Indian community was central to the celebration, the majority of attendees were from the wider public, reflecting the event’s strong appeal as a shared community experience rather than a single‑community gathering.
Participants included:

Local community performers and cultural groups
School‑aged performers and youth organisations
Multi‑generational volunteers
Community organisations and sponsors
Health, safety, and well-being partners

The event was planned and delivered almost entirely by volunteers, supported by sponsorships and community partnerships, reinforcing its not‑for‑profit ethos. Robust health and safety planning, including an on-site medical response team and coordination with authorities, ensured a safe and positive environment for attendees.

Overall, the 35th Waikato Diwali Mela 2025 exemplifies a high‑impact, community‑driven event that delivers cultural celebration at scale while strengthening social cohesion, belonging, and community pride.
