Te Rūnanga o Kirikiriroa

Te Rūnanga o Kirikiriroa Kaupapa Māori, Housing & Mental Health Social Service Provider. We offer a Whanau First, Tikanga Based, Wellbeing Approach.

Established in the mid 1980’s under the guidance of the late Maori Queen Te Arikinui Te Atairangikaahu and Mayor Sir Ross Jansen, Te Rūnanga ō Kirikiriroa Charitable Trust was established as the Urban Māori Authority for Kirikiriroa (Hamilton). The Constitution and Trust Deed for the Rūnanga were formalised in May 1988. With the establishment of this urban authority was an express acknowledgement

of the sovereign rights of the mana whenua and tangata whenua of this area. The Rūnanga was mandated to focus on issues relating to Article III of the Treaty of Waitangi, and, represent the needs of Maataa waka and Pacific peoples who live within the city boundaries. The Rūnanga is today recognised as a significant voice for Māori and Pacific Island peoples and has a current and relevant response to many social, health, political and wellbeing needs of their people. He mihi tenei ki Te Arikinui Te Atairangikaahu mō tōna wawata kia whakaturea Te Rūnanga ō Kirikiriroa he ringaringa mōna i waenganui i te iwi. We Acknowledge our late Queen Te Arikinui Te Atairangikaahu for her vision in establishing Te Rūnanga ō Kirikiriroa as her hands amongst the people

E mihi ana ki a koutou o te YMCA Waikato, mō tō koutou tautoko i tā tātou kaupapa, arā ko Te Tangi o Te Pīpīwharauroa.
He wairua āio tō te “Chill Out Space” – He wāhi ātaahua, he wāhi haumaru hoki mā ngā taiohi hei whakatā, hei noho marie.

Thank you to the YWCA Waikato for supporting Te Tangi o Te Pīpīwharauroa. The “Chill Out Space” created a calm, beautiful environment for taiohi to pause, and relax. We look forward to what next year brings.

For the past three months, taiohi, Tia and Scott have led the planning of our Youth Week event, Te Tangi o Te Pīpīwharauroa. Their involvement meant the day was truly for taiohi.

“It was an amazing day filled with connection, laughter, and positive energy. Taiohi came together through free activities, sports, wellbeing spaces, kai and creativity” - Tia

“In my opinion, the day went great, we were able to learn a lot about other youth, and I also loved seeing all the connections everyone was making on the day” - Scott

We were honoured to spend part of the day with the Children’s Commissioner, Claire Achmad, who was gifted the Tree of Voices, so that taiohi voices can continue to be heard beyond Youth Week.

Te reo o Te Pīpīwharauroa in a forest environment completes the circle of reo o ngā manu katoa and they need to be heard by the wider group.

We wanted our taiohi voices to shine in all areas of our event Te Tangi o Te Pīpīwharauroa, so we hosted a graffiti workshop where they had a chance to connect, find their voice and collectively worked to create the media backdrop for the day.

Te Puāwaitanga o Ngā Waka, our whānau, our why.

Our whānau share their journeys through our Progressive Home Ownership programme.
From building financial confidence, capability, and connections, to moving into their first homes as neighbours, their experiences bring the heart of our kaupapa to life.

This is more than housing. It’s a whānau-first, tikanga-based approach to intergenerational wellbeing.

E ai ki ngā kōrero o tō tātou Tumu Whakarae – “When you provide safe, secure, affordable housing, with wrap-around support. Whānau don’t just survive, they thrive and they live their best lives.”

He mihi nui tēnei ki a koutou katoa.
We acknowledge with gratitude, the partners and stakeholders who have walked alongside us to bring Te Puāwaitanga o Ngā Waka to fruition.
