ROC International Garden (previously Grandview Community Garden) is a free-to-join organic allotment garden in Nawton, Hamilton where members grow food for themselves and their families

Saturday mentoring sessions are from 10am till 3pm

Come and join us You can also email us at: [email protected]

Grandview Community Garden Trust was formed in June 2012 as an outcome of the Waikato Internati

onal Community Garden Project (WIC). The Trust was then dissolved in 2021, and ROC Trust took over management of the gardens. In 2022, the name was changed to ROC International Garden, to reflect ROC's goal that the garden be a place to unite many ethnic communities by the global language of gardening. ROC also wants the garden to be a place where members experience healing, grow in resilience and confidence, and flourish like the plants they tend to. Membership is free and we are open to anyone, in particular members of the local community. The 3,000sqM site is currently gardened allotment style by around 40 members from over 16 ethnic groups. Each member and/or whanau group works an allotment at the ROC International Garden, choosing what they wish to plant and taking home what they grow. A Garden mentor works with the group on Saturdays from 10am. The mentoring sessions follow the New Zealand vegetable and fruit gardening year from sowing to harvest, including; planning a garden for year-long harvest. Participants take new skills home and continue to garden.

How quickly time flies — it’s already the end of May, and our garden is gradually preparing for a new season. Many of us have been busy clearing, planting, and getting our plots ready for what’s to come.

It’s hard to believe that we moved to this garden at the end of June last year. Looking back on the past year, what an amazing journey it has been! We’ve shared harvests, learned together, worked side by side, and created many happy memories.

Thank you all for being part of this beautiful community. Your participation makes this garden special. Let’s keep growing, caring, and cultivating this wonderful place together. 🌿

🌿✨ Saturday at the Community Garden – A Big Yacon Harvest! ✨🌿

This Saturday brought us another joyful and productive day in the garden! Our Yacon (snow lotus root / 天山雪蓮果) harvest was truly amazing — so many beautiful roots came out of the soil! 🌱🥔

To make the day even more special, I prepared two simple Yacon dishes for everyone to taste. 😋

🥢 Yacon Salad – I cut the Yacon into fries-sized pieces, lightly blanched them in salted water, then seasoned them with vinegar, a little sugar, and sesame oil. Refreshing and delicious!

🌶️ Stir-fried Yacon – Another dish was stir-fried with black fungus, carrots, garlic, and a little chili. Full of flavour and so tasty!

Everyone enjoyed the tasting and was pleasantly surprised by how versatile Yacon can be in cooking. It turns out there are many delicious ways to prepare it! These were only simple recipes — perhaps everyone can get creative and share even more ideas in the future. 🍽️💡

The weather was beautiful and comfortable, and although only a small group came, we happily spent time walking around the garden, tidying plots, turning soil, harvesting, and planting new seedlings. 🌼🌿

Another peaceful, productive, and happy day in our community garden. Thank you to everyone who joined us! 💚
🌿 In our community garden, everyone comes and goes freely, following their own pace and schedule. Some work a little, some stay longer, some simply enjoy being surrounded by the green open space and fresh air. 💚

There is no pressure here — just the simple joy of connecting with the land, with nature, and with one another.

When you sincerely care for the soil and give your time and effort, the land always gives something back. Sometimes it is a beautiful harvest, and sometimes it is peace, friendship, and happiness. 🌱✨

After all, when we care for the land with heart, it naturally rewards us with abundance.

🌱 A Special Yacon Harvest at Our Community Garden! 🌱

Last weekend, our community garden celebrated a wonderful yacon harvest — a joyful moment filled with excitement, teamwork, and sharing. 😊

A special appreciation goes to Jeffrey and Tenshin, who planted and lovingly cared for the yacon over the season. Thanks to their patience and dedication, we were rewarded with a beautiful harvest hidden beneath the soil. Watching the yacon being carefully dug up brought smiles and excitement to everyone! 🌿

For those who may not know, yacon is a unique root vegetable originally from the Andes Mountains in South America. It may look simple on the outside, but inside it is crisp, juicy, and naturally sweet — often compared to a refreshing mix between an apple and a pear! 🍐🍎

Yacon is also known for its natural prebiotic properties and is enjoyed by many people for supporting healthy digestion. It can be eaten fresh, added to salads, or used in cooking.

What made this harvest even more special was the spirit of sharing. After harvesting, Jeffrey and Tenshin kindly shared the yacon with fellow gardeners, spreading both the harvest and happiness throughout our community. 💛

Community gardening is not only about growing food — it is also about friendship, generosity, and learning together. Thank you to everyone who helped make this such a memorable day! 🌼

Mother’s Day weekend brought us together once again at the community garden. 🌿

After a rainy night and another light shower in the morning, the garden felt fresh and full of life. Although the weather was a little uncertain, everyone still arrived with smiles and enthusiasm, ready for another beautiful Saturday together.

Today we had one more kumara patch to harvest. Just like last time, everyone joined in — pulling vines, digging carefully through the soil, and waiting excitedly to discover what was hidden underneath. This week it was another group of friends experiencing the joy of harvesting kumara for the first time, and every kumara found brought laughter and happy cheers. 🍠✨

As this was our first year growing sweet potatoes, we received the seedlings a bit later than ideal. Even so, everyone agreed that the harvest turned out surprisingly well! We are already making plans to plant earlier next season and look forward to an even better crop next year.

To celebrate Mother’s Day, we prepared a carrot cake for morning tea. 🥕🍰 Everyone gathered together to share food, stories, and laughter. It was a simple but heartwarming celebration filled with friendship, teamwork, and gratitude.

The garden is not only a place to grow vegetables — it is also a place where friendships grow, memories are made, and joy is shared. Wishing all mothers a very Happy Mother’s Day. 💐

Some w**ds are actually edible, but this is where you really need to be careful 🌿 But never eat a w**d unless you’re 100% sure of the ID and know the area hasn’t been sprayed. When in doubt, leave it alone.

🌿✨ Community Garden Update – Last Saturday ✨🌿
The weather was sunny and pleasantly mild, perfect for a day in the garden. A number of our members joined us, bringing energy and excitement to the space 😊

The highlight of the day was harvesting sweet potatoes! 🍠
We worked together to lift the vines and carefully dig along the growing lines. As each sweet potato emerged from the soil, cheers and laughter filled the air—it was such a joyful and rewarding moment 🎉

All the harvested sweet potatoes were gathered and shared among everyone who came along. There’s something truly special about enjoying the fruits of our collective effort—it brought smiles all around 💛

With May now here, a new season begins. After the harvest, we worked together to tidy up the garden beds, preparing the soil for the next round of planting. Step by step, we continue nurturing this beautiful space 🌱

Another fulfilling and happy day in the garden!

🌸 A little reminder: Next weekend is the second week of May—Mother’s Day! We’ll have a small, warm celebration in the garden, and everyone is warmly invited to join us 💐

We look forward to seeing you there!
