💛 Ngā mihi nui, Rototuna High School! 💛

As we reflect on the very special 20th anniversary of the Rauawaawa Kaumātua Olympics, we want to acknowledge and celebrate our wonderful partnership with Rototuna High School, now in its seventh year.

A heartfelt mihi to Matt, the Rototuna High School team, and the amazing rangatahi who brought such energy, enthusiasm and manaaki to our milestone celebration. He mihi aroha ki a koutou ❤️🙏

There is something powerful about bringing rangatahi and kaumātua together. Across seven years, we have seen relationships grow through shared laughter, encouragement, learning and genuine connection between generations.

The Kaumātua Olympics has always been about much more than competition. It is about whanaungatanga, hauora, participation, belonging and celebrating the mana of our kaumātua. Having rangatahi alongside us strengthens this kaupapa, while creating meaningful opportunities for young people to connect with kaumātua, learn through lived experience and contribute to their community.

This is intergenerational impact in action, generations learning from one another, challenging assumptions about ageing, strengthening community connections and creating a greater sense of belonging for both kaumātua and rangatahi.

To every Rototuna High School student and staff member who has walked alongside us, tēnā koutou katoa. Your contribution is not simply helping us deliver an event; you are helping build stronger relationships between generations and a more connected community.

We treasure our partnership with Rototuna High School and look forward to continuing to grow what is possible when rangatahi and kaumātua come together to share knowledge, build relationships, learn from one another and thrive together.

Seven years together! and an impact that reaches far beyond one day. 💛

Kia ora e te whānau ❤️

He mihi nui, he mihi aroha to our Mayor Tim Macindoe for sharing such warm words about our 85th Anniversary celebrations at Te Puna o Te Ora.

It means so much to have the support of our city’s leadership, our funders, tuakana, supporters, friends and whānau as we honour 85 years of manaakitanga, and the lasting legacy of the founders of Te Puna o Te Ora and Rauawaawa's Founding Trustee and Chairman Matua Owen Purcell QSM, whose name now graces our largest social room.

Moments like these remind us why this special place continues to stand strong for our community and Kaumātua, past, present and future.

There’s still more of this beautiful day to share… keep an eye out, something special is coming soon 🌿

85 Years of Legacy.
85 Years of Manaakitanga. ❤️

On Friday, we honoured 85 years of Te Puna o Te Ora and unveiled a special naming plaque recognising our Founding Trustee and Chairman, Matua Owen Purcell QSM.

A heartfelt mihi to Te Kōhao Health for capturing these beautiful moments and helping us tell this story.

For 85 years, generations of people have built more than a place. They created a community where people could gather, connect, support one another, and belong. Their vision became our foundation.

Today, we carry that responsibility forward, serving the Kaumātua of today while protecting this legacy for the generations to come.
As we celebrate this remarkable milestone, we also look ahead.

The next chapter of Te Puna o Te Ora is about to begin. Eighty-five years ago, others created a legacy for us. Soon, an opportunity will be announced to help shape the legacy we leave for those who follow.

Learning from Super-Aged Societies: Prime Minister’s Scholarship Study Tour – Japan & Singapore.

A team from Rauawaawa Kaumātua Charitable Trust, including Shobana Reddy (Systems Innovator, Healthy Families Te Ngira), recently returned from a six-week Prime Minister’s Scholarship study tour through Japan and Singapore to learn how “super-aged societies” support people to live longer, healthier lives.

In Japan, where more than a quarter of the population is over 65, the team presented kaupapa Māori approaches at an international ageing conference in Tokyo, and visited the Ainu Cultural Centre to reflect on Indigenous identity, culture and wellbeing. Site visits across Japan also highlighted practical, place-based ideas such as age-friendly housing and the “Fukuoka 100” initiative.

A standout was Okinawa, visiting Ōgimi and Nakijin villages, part of Japan’s internationally recognised “Blue Zone”. In Ōgimi, the team met kaumātua who were still gardening daily in their late 80s, growing and sharing fresh kai, and checking in on neighbours like whānau. Their advice was simple and consistent: keep a routine, move your body every day, eat well, and stay connected to your hapori. The team also learned about shikuwasa, a local citrus that is grown, shared and celebrated, showing how everyday food traditions can sit at the heart of hauora. In Nakijin they visited a fit and spritely centenarian (104) cared for by whānau, her advice on stress: just let it go. The local GP caring for many centenarians offered the following advice: healthy ageing is influenced across the whole life span, not only in old age.

The tour concluded in Singapore at the World Ageing Festival 2026, where the team shared the 20-year journey of the Kaumātua Olympics, celebrating culture, movement and joy as essentials of wellbeing. While attending the 14th Asia Pacific Eldercare Innovation Awards dinner, the team also received a Special Recognition Award, recognising the impact and innovation of the Kaumātua Olympics and affirming the value of kaupapa Māori approaches on an international stage.

For Healthy Families Te Ngira, these Okinawa insights reinforce a prevention focus: designing age-friendly neighbourhoods where kaumātua can stay active, connected and supported close to home. As Aotearoa prepares for a growing older population, our opportunity is to strengthen the conditions for hauora, so ageing well becomes the everyday experience, not the exception.

🎉 A WOW moment for Rauawaawa!🥰 🌟

From Waikato to the World stage!

We’re thrilled and honoured to be Finalists in two categories at the 2026 Asia Pacific Eldercare Innovation Awards hosted by Ageing Asia🙏❤️

Humbling to be selected from over 400 entries across 16 countries for our mahi celebrating the Kaumātua Olympics, and in 2026 we proudly host our 20th event with our long-time partner Rototuna High School and sponsors and supporters Te Rūnanga o Kirikiriroa and BUPA!

Kia ora e te whānau 🙋🏽‍♀️🥰

What a beautiful night! the 2025 Waikato Business Awards ✨

Here's the video we got to see for the first time, created by the Chamber and INDX Media (Ariana and Borden), voiced by our very own, Manutahi😎

Rauawaawa was privileged to be showcased twice on the night, as a finalist alongside these Waikato giants🙏🙌🎉

For Purpose, Congratulations Braemar Charitable Trust (winners) & ConnexU 2020 Trust.

People’s Choice, Congratulations Volare (winners) & Tolbec Hearing Clinic. - A huge mihi to all those that voted for us 🥰😘

While we didn’t bring home a trophy, we gained something just as important: visibility, awareness, and appreciation for the many whānau and businesses in Waikato that are leaders in their industry, recognised internationally and transformational here at home.

A special thanks to our wonderful mentor Sir John Gallagher for guiding our journey to join. and the innovation of our Waikato social enterprise partners (since 2020) Mike Williams & Georgia Fulton, MWDesign - Hamilton & Tony Rutz (Active Plastics) for our Kuki Reka Kani - cookie cutters (www.buyreka.com). Since 2024, our international partnership with Ivan Goh & Fann Lee ( QuantumTX ) and Professor Alfredo Franco-Obregón ( ) for the BIXEPS health technology (www.mitocharge.com).

Our heartfelt mihi to the team, Rob, Heather and Rebecca for your guidance, Amanda and Jono our lovely judges and everyone involved in hosting the awards including the legendary Duncan Garner, MC - ngā mihi mahana ki a koutou❤️

If this exposure enhances our team’s kaha, builds confidence across our stakeholders, and opens fresh opportunities for our kaupapa, then having the privilege of just being part of these amazing Awards, has been a meaningful win for Rauawaawa and the Kaumātua we serve.
