Older students haven’t had the benefit of the investment in structured literacy and numeracy

As Year 11 students nationwide prepare for the NCEA Literacy and Numeracy Common Assessment Activities (CAAs), attention must also be given to the broader factors influencing student success, particularly students who struggle. These assessments are conducted online during regular school hours, with schools typically providing digital devices for each student. Many secondary schools have reported that students who undertake additional preparation outside the classroom are more likely to achieve success on their first attempt, and a range of online study resources are made available to support this process. Consequently, schools often encourage caregivers to assist with home-based revision by engaging with study materials alongside their children.

While this expectation may appear straightforward, evidence suggests that such support cannot be assumed to be equally accessible across all households. RNZ reported that Aotearoa/New Zealand has experienced a significant decline in international adult literacy and numeracy rankings. According to the OECD, although many countries recorded lower scores compared with the previous assessment cycle, Aotearoa/New Zealand’s declines were among the most substantial. This is particularly concerning, as students requiring the greatest academic support are often those whose caregivers may themselves experience difficulties with reading, writing, comprehension, and mathematical proficiency.

In addition, many schools rely on digital platforms such as Google Classroom to distribute learning materials. Although these systems are efficient for many families, they may present considerable barriers for caregivers with literacy, numeracy, or digital capability challenges. As a result, inequities in access to effective support may widen, further entrenching disparities in achievement outcomes.

It is also important to recognise that many of the students currently in secondary school did not benefit from the widespread implementation of structured literacy and evidence-informed literacy approaches in their earlier years of schooling and therefore may have entered high school significantly behind their peers. Despite these challenges, many continue to persevere with determination. We extend our best wishes to all students undertaking their NCEA Literacy and Numeracy Common Assessment Activities (CAAs).

TUI TRUST WISHES YOU A MERRY CHRISTMAS

At this time of year, well-deserved recognition is often given to academic achievers through awards and certificates. However, for many of the children we support, the act of attending school consistently and engaging to the best of their ability represents a significant and commendable achievement in itself.

For these learners, cognitive overload can be a persistent barrier, and their perseverance deserves explicit recognition. We therefore take this opportunity to congratulate those children who have reached the end of the school year through sustained effort and resilience. The holiday period offers a well-earned respite from the demands of continuous information processing, allowing time for rest and recovery.

Thank you to everyone who made this year special. We absolutely loved working with all of you. We are especially grateful to our volunteers, supporters and sponsors Craig Barrett partner at BTSR, Lotteries Grant and Trust Waikato who enable us to continue our work in our community.

Mathematics is often challenging for children who struggle with reading, largely because years of difficulty accessing the language of mathematics can hinder their understanding.

For parents wishing to support their children at home, the Ministry of Education launched a new resource website this week. The site is still in its early stages, with ready-to-use content currently available for NZC Years 3–8. At first glance, it appears to be a valuable resource, and we look forward to exploring it more thoroughly over the holidays. While there is room for growth, it is certainly a positive step forward and far better than having no support available for children and families.

Two for two! First the Hamilton Gardens, this time at the Distinction Conference Centre in Hamilton where we also held a Literacy Conference. Great to be back.

The Community Waikato Conference provided a highly valuable two days of professional learning, featuring thought-provoking presentations, meaningful engagement with sector colleagues from across the region, and opportunities to explore innovative approaches to current challenges.

A sincere thank you to the team at Community Waikato for the extensive work invested in delivering such a well-executed two-day conference. Your efforts were evident throughout, and the positive ripple effects of this event will undoubtedly extend across the sector for some time.

A huge thank you to WEL Energy Trust for your sponsorship.

Huge thanks to the Waikato Community Funders Group for hosting today’s Waikato Expo at the beautiful Hamilton Gardens Central Court 💛 The last time we were here, we were hosting our very first literacy conference — it’s changed a bit since then with all the amazing renovations.

The workshops were super helpful, and the stalls were amazing — full of great people and valuable information. Met many awesome, like-minded people doing incredible mahi in our communities, many of whom support vulnerable children and young people. Feeling inspired and grateful to be part of it all! 🙌

The Great NZ Handwriting Micro-Challenge

Over the course of the last few months teachers have uploaded samples of a ‘most improved’ student’s work via the Great NZ Handwriting Challenge page. These show progress over at least 20 weeks of daily teaching, and the samples are remarkable. The challenge closing date was extended and is set to finish soon, it’s not too late to enter.

You can’t intervene your way out of a Tier I problem

When our Tier 1 instruction is effective, the number of students who need interventions are reduced, which then improves the effectiveness of Tier 2 and Tier 3 supports. We can’t intervene our way out of inadequate Tier 1 instruction. By prioritising professional development for teachers and parents, we create the conditions for lasting success: informed adults, evidence-based practice, and children who feel seen, supported, and capable. Literacy is not just about reading and writing; it is about opening doors to opportunity, confidence, and future achievement. Investing in people—the educators and families who shape a child’s learning every day—is the most powerful step we can take toward lifting literacy rates across Aotearoa/New Zealand.

One of the ways we bring this commitment to life is by providing opportunities for teachers to engage in high-quality professional development. When teachers are given the tools, time, and training they deserve, the impact on their classrooms is immediate and profound.
