Elaine and Shibbie felt there were a few things that needed tackling at their Mangakino home, but top of the list was their leaky roof.

An info session on Habitat’s Home Repair programme provided the answers.

“We came along and listened and I was just rapt straight away. For the first thing, they help kaumatua and those in need, plus the fact it was interest free, that struck me even more so. You didn’t feel you were burdened with all these extras on top.”

The first bout of rain after the repairs was the test, and Elaine is happy to report the new roof is doing its job.

“It’s a fresh start, a new beginning. A chance to actually take a breath instead of just feeling the weight of all the work that needs doing.”

When life presented a few challenges, Ruth and Stuart’s garden got away on them.

But now the Palmerston North family have a fresh start, thanks to a hand up from Habitat, the Royal New Zealand Air Force, Bunnings Warehouse New Zealand, and Enviro NZ.

In just one day, that family’s yard was transformed – the site was cleared, a broken fence replaced, new vege gardens assembled and planted, and a fun play space created for the kids.

We stand with the people of Nepal following the devastating flash flood that have swept through parts of the country. 💙

Homes have been destroyed, families displaced, and communities are facing immense loss as the full scale of the disaster continues to emerge.

Habitat for Humanity Nepal has activated its humanitarian response team and is working closely with local authorities, the Shelter Cluster, and humanitarian partners to assess needs and identify response priorities. As assessments continue, Habitat Nepal is preparing to support affected communities with emergency shelter and longer-term recovery assistance where it is needed most.

Habitat for Humanity New Zealand has a long-standing relationship with Habitat Nepal, having supported communities recovering from previous disasters, including the 2015 earthquake and the devastating floods of October 2025.

We stand alongside our colleagues at Habitat Nepal and the communities they serve during this difficult time. Please keep the people of Nepal, and those involved in rescue and recovery efforts, in your thoughts.
