Querida comunidad,

Dear Community,
My name is Wilfer Martínez Patiño (Chino). I am the father of James, Sully, and Marcela Martínez Andrade.
Our family is devastated by the tragic loss of the mother of my children, Leidy, and of our beloved son, James. There are no words sufficient to express the pain and sorrow we are experiencing.
Our daughter Sully remains in hospital recovering from her injuries. At this time, our entire focus is on her recovery and on supporting our eldest daughter, Marcela, who was not involved in the accident but has also been deeply affected by this tragedy.
These have been extremely difficult days for our family. While I have remained focused on supporting Sully through her surgeries and recovery, my partner, Kyra, has been managing the complex arrangements involved in bringing our loved ones from Palmerston North to Hamilton. Together, we have devoted all of our energy to the wellbeing of our daughters and to navigating the consequences of this tragedy.
We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude for the countless expressions of love, solidarity, and generosity we have received. Both the Latin American community and the New Zealand community have surrounded us with an overwhelming outpouring of support, compassion, and kindness, and we are deeply moved by this generosity. We would also like to extend our special thanks to James and Sully’s school community, Aberdeen School, for the care, support, and kindness they have shown our family during these incredibly difficult times.
For those who wish to support our family, the only official fundraiser has been organised by my partner, Kyra, and my sister-in-law, Crystal, who have taken on this responsibility on behalf of our family while I remain fully focused on my daughters and do not have the time or emotional capacity to manage it myself.
Official fundraiser:

Out of respect for the family’s privacy, another of the children who passed away will no longer be identified by name in future public communications or fundraising materials.
We would also like to thank the government agencies that are supporting our daughters and our family through this difficult time, as well as members of the community who have stood beside us and supported us personally. We deeply appreciate all the help, guidance, and care we are receiving. We also extend our sincere gratitude to the New Zealand Police and emergency services for the professionalism, respect, and support they have shown from the very beginning.
We respectfully ask the media and the general public to allow our family to go through this process with privacy and peace. In recent weeks, interviews and public comments have been made by individuals who do not necessarily represent our immediate family or fully understand our situation. At this time, our absolute priority is the physical and emotional wellbeing of Marcela and Sully, and we ask that speculation and public discussion about the circumstances of the accident be avoided while our family continues to grieve and recover.
I would also like to clarify that this statement is not being published directly from my own social media accounts, as I do not regularly use or manage social media.
With regard to funeral services and memorial activities, we authorise the Hamilton Colombian Community Trust (HCCT) to share official information once arrangements have been finalised.
Finally, we thank the media, community organisations, and all those who have helped share the fundraiser and messages of support. The sharing of the fundraiser has been of tremendous help to our family, and we are grateful that it continues to be circulated. At the same time, we respectfully request privacy and space as we grieve, support our daughters, and begin the long journey toward recovery.
Thank you for your understanding, kindness, support, and compassion.
