Tropical Cyclone Vaianu is forecast to move southwards bringing severe wind and rain to New Zealand over the weekend. Storms like Cyclone Vaianu can cause power and communications outages, so it's important to be prepared.

Know how you will stay informed.
๐Ÿ“ป A solar- or battery-powered radio (or your car radio) can help you keep up to date with the latest news. Check which FM and AM radio frequencies deliver emergency updates in your area.
๐Ÿ’ป Follow your local Civil Defence Emergency Management Group online for the latest local information.
โš ๏ธ Emergency Mobile Alerts are broadcast to all capable phones from targeted cell towers. They are an extra channel to help keep you safe. If you feel your life is in danger, donโ€™t wait for an official warning. Take immediate action.

Prepare for no power.
๐ŸงŠ If the power goes out, eat the food from your fridge first, then your freezer. Then eat the food in the cupboard or your emergency kit.
๐Ÿฅซ Have a stock of food that doesnโ€™t need to be cooked (canned is good) or something to cook your food on (gas barbecue or camp stove). Donโ€™t forget food for babies and pets. Remember you can share resources with your neighbours.
๐Ÿ”ฆ Use torches or battery powered devices for lighting. Don't use candles and oil lamps if possible. Candles cause fires and are quiet and easily forgotten.
โšก If you or someone at home relies on electricity to prevent serious harm to health, let your power company know. Find out more about medically dependent consumers at shorturl.at/ETo3Q

With severe weather possible this weekend, make sure you have a plan .

๐Ÿ˜๏ธ Decide where you will go if you need to evacuate and make sure everyone in your household knows. Your evacuation place will probably be with friends or family, so make sure they know your plans.

๐ŸŽ’ Have a grab bag ready for everyone in your household. It should have warm clothes, a bottle of water, snacks, copies of important documents, and photo ID. Remember any medications you may need. Keep your first aid kit, torch, radio and batteries, mobility devices and any other essential supplies somewhere you can grab them in a hurry.

๐Ÿˆ Before the weather starts, bring pets indoors and move animals to a safe place. Your pets can get unsettled by storms and it is more comforting and safer for them to be with you.

โšก Prepare for power outages. Fully charge your phones and power banks and check you have data or credit on your phone.

MetService is tracking Tropical Cyclone Vaianu which is forecast to move southwards bringing severe wind and rain to New Zealand over the weekend.

To prepare for this:

๐Ÿถ Make a plan for your whฤnau and pets.
โš ๏ธ Bring inside or tie down anything that strong winds could break or pick up. If you have a trampoline, turn it upside down to minimise the surface area exposed to wind and tie it down firmly.
๐ŸŒฒ Remove any debris or loose items from around your property. Branches and firewood can become airborne in strong winds.
๐Ÿก Check on your neighbours and anyone who might need your help.
๐Ÿ„ Move farm animals to areas that are safe from flooding and high winds.
๐Ÿšฎ Clear waste and debris away from drains.
๐Ÿ”ฆ Be prepared with torches and have a solar or battery powered radio so you can keep up with the latest news and alerts.
