Working together to improve the health and connectivity of our landscapes, waterways and people to ensure a sustainable future for all ecosystems, communities and livelihoods. The Muriwai Community Catchment Group is a newly formed group based in and around the rural community of Muriwai, Gisborne – or as we call it, the 'Gateway to Gizzy'. Our group currently consists of 27 active members represe
nting 15 properties, including lifestyle blocks, large sheep and beef properties, forestry, horticulture, whenua Māori, and public conservation land. Inspired by locals wanting to reconnect after a challenging year in Tairawhiti, a few landowners and residents met in April 2024 to discuss shared concerns around community resilience, changing regulations, and environmental issues like erosion, pest control, biodiversity, and water quality. These discussions led to a series of wider community hui, where some key community and catchment strengths, challenges, and opportunities were identified, marking the beginning of the Muriwai Community Catchment Group and its 'Safeguarding the Gateway to Gizzy' project.
