Hospice or palliative care is specialised care for patients who are terminally ill. Our focus is on improving quality of life for the patient and providing support for the family. We do this by providing practical advice, physical, emotional and spiritual support, with an emphasis on pain relief and symptom management. The service includes family support and grief and bereavement care. The majority of our patients are cared for in their own homes. We also provide support to patients in resthomes and hospital. While we do not have a hospice inpatient unit, we do have two designated beds at Gisborne Hospital if circumstances mean it is no longer possible or appropriate to care for a patient at home. To ensure the best possible care for patient and family, we work in partnership with a variety of health professionals including general practitioners, district nurses, Gisborne Hospital, and other allied health services. As with all hospice palliative care services throughout New Zealand, the majority of our funding comes from grants and donations. Palliative care is provided free of charge for all people in need, regardless of religion, race, gender or age.

🎙️ Seven Days — seven conversations about death, dying and palliative care.

A great new podcast series offering honest, thoughtful conversations about the end of life, from a range of different perspectives.

Hosted by Nurse Maude Hospice registered nurse Grace, each episode features members of the Nurse Maude team sharing their experiences, insights and reflections from working alongside people and whānau at the end of life.

Whether you work in palliative care, are supporting someone you love, or simply want to learn more about death and dying, Seven Days offers valuable and compassionate kōrero.

🎧 A great listen and a wonderful resource for opening up conversations around death, dying and end-of-life care.

📚 Exciting news for grief education in Aotearoa!

From 2027, grief education will be formally included in the New Zealand curriculum, with Health and Physical Education now including five statements related to grief across five year groups.

This is an important step forward in supporting tamariki and rangatahi to understand grief, loss and the emotions that can come with them — helping create more compassionate and supportive communities from an early age.

It’s also a wonderful example of what can be achieved through collective advocacy and a shared commitment to better support our young people.

Voices of Whānau 💚

Our team is privileged to provide care and support not only to patients, but to the people who love and care for them too.

This heartfelt feedback came through our recent Whānau Survey:

“There are no words that could express the gratitude we felt during that time. THANK YOU doesn’t seem enough for the support my daughters and I received from the team.”

Palliative care is about more than managing physical symptoms. It’s also about supporting the emotional and practical needs of patients and their whānau.

Our team is here to listen, provide reassurance, answer questions and help families navigate an incredibly challenging time.

Every whānau has different needs.

Thank you to this whānau, and to everyone who takes the time to share their experience with us. Your words mean a great deal to our team.

As September comes to an end, Wills Month is a chance to think about the kind of legacy we'd like to leave behind. 💙

A legacy isn't always about how much you leave.

Sometimes, it's about the values you lived by, the people you cared for, and the community you helped along the way.

For Hospice Tairāwhiti, every gift left in a Will helps us look towards the future - helping ensure patients and their whānau can continue to receive compassionate care, comfort and support when they need it most.

If Hospice Tairāwhiti is a cause that matters to you, you can make a lasting difference by including us in your Will.

You can create your Will for free with EveryWill, in around 10 minutes.

💙 Your wishes. Your values. Your legacy.

Voices of Whānau 💚

At Hospice Tairāwhiti, our dedicated team brings compassion, expertise and care to every patient and whānau we support.

We are incredibly grateful when whānau take the time to tell us about their experience and the difference our team has made.

This feedback from our recent Whānau Survey means a great deal to us:

“Very good seems an understatement. The care provided by Hospice Tairāwhiti was excellent. The team is dedicated, compassionate, and highly skilled. We were fortunate to have their support.”

Thank you to this whānau, and to everyone who has shared their feedback. Your experiences help us recognise what matters most and continue striving to provide the very best care and support to our community.

September is Wills Month 💙

Making a Will isn't just about what happens in the future. It's about making sure the people and causes that matter to you are remembered in the way you choose.

For many of us, that might mean looking after family, friends or loved ones. It might also mean leaving something behind for a cause close to our hearts.

If Hospice Tairāwhiti has made a difference to you, your whānau or someone you love, you can choose to include a gift to Hospice Tairāwhiti in your Will.

It doesn't need to be a large gift. A small gift can help make a lasting difference to hospice care in our community.

And with EveryWill, getting started is simple, online and completely free.

💙 Take 10 minutes this Wills Month to put your wishes in place.
