Trust Tairāwhiti was pleased to help seven visitors return safely via Air Ruatoria after being stranded in Te Araroa during the recent severe weather.

The group was warmly cared for by the local community while taking refuge at Hinerupe Marae. Among them were the Vickers-Glover family. Parents Fran and Byron had promised the kids a trip to Splash Planet — so Air Ruatoria flew them to Hastings to make it happen.

A huge thank you to the Te Araroa community for looking after our manuhiri so well!

Ka pai Slash for Cash team 👏🌱
We’re proud to tautoko this community-led, iwi-endorsed kaupapa turning forestry slash into positive outcomes for people and whenua.

Through the use of mobile carbonisation kilns, Slash for Cash is transforming waste into biochar fertiliser and smokeless briquettes, creating local jobs, supporting healthier whenua and reducing flood risk. Trust funding of just over $203k will support the group to sustain and scale operations from January to June 2026 across Tolaga Bay, Ruatōria and parts of Wairoa.

Great to see the team heading to market and getting their trained workforce into action. We encourage whānau and businesses to get behind this kaupapa and support local innovation. Tātau tātau 🌿

🌊 Tairāwhiti is on show as the home of surfing excellence 🌊

We are proud to be presenting the 2026 National Surfing Championships, held right here in Tairāwhiti. Over the past few days, our coastline has welcomed more than 350 athletes and 400 support crew, bringing energy, whānau, and community spirit to the region.

From under 14s through to competitors aged over 70, this championship is a powerful showcase of surfing talent across generations. Hosting an event of this scale in Tairāwhiti reinforces what locals already know – our rohe is a world-class surfing destination, grounded in manaakitanga and connection to moana.

🌟 Final day tomorrow – come down, cheer loud, and celebrate the incredible athletes riding our waves.

Tātau tātau 💙

New home for Mareikura waka set to open

A long-awaited moment for Mareikura Waka Ama Club is nearly here.

On Saturday 6 December, the club will open its new waka storage facility at Anzac Park with a dawn karakia at 5am, mihi whakatau at 9am and a club paddle past the new site.

This new space will keep their waka safe for the next generation of paddlers as Mareikura celebrates its 40th year of establishment as the country’s oldest waka ama club.🚣‍♀️

Trust Tairāwhiti is proud to support this project with $1.3m in funding as an early win initiative identified in the Tairāwhiti Sport Facilities Business Case.

Waerenga a Hika: Hohou te Rongo is now open at Tairāwhiti Museum ✨

Bringing together taonga, contemporary works and intergenerational perspectives, the exhibition supports deeper understanding of the 1865 battle of Waerenga-a-Hika and its ongoing impact.

Trust Tairāwhiti has contributed $65k to Te Aitanga a Mahaki Trust to help bring this kaupapa to life. Marking 160 years since the battle, the exhibition creates space for thoughtful kōrero, learning and healing 🕊️

Artists, curators and tamariki contributors approached the mahi with care, highlighting how art can bridge past and present while supporting meaningful reflection.

Open until March 2026.
