How can MRI and machine learning help us better understand and predict Multiple Sclerosis (MS) progression? A new literature review led by Umayal Venkatasamy explores this question by bringing together findings from 37 studies in the field.
The review explores how MRI can provide valuable insights into changes in the brain associated with MS, while highlighting both the opportunities and challenges of using machine learning to analyse this imaging data.
By bringing together the current evidence, the review highlights the potential for AI to work alongside MRI to help predict how MS may develop over time. Machine learning can identify MRI patterns associated with future disease activity, relapses and progression. However, further validation is needed before these approaches can be widely used in clinical practice.
The work brings together researchers from the University of Auckland, AUT, Mātai and Vision Research Foundation, highlighting the importance of collaboration in advancing MS research.
