Welcoming Tillman to our Taiao team 🌿

Tillman studied ecology at university, with a focus on metacommunities in river ecosystems, bringing another layer of knowledge and experience to our taiao mahi.

He has also volunteered with Project Island Song in the Bay of Islands.

His connection to nature started early, growing up beside the forest in Germany with two biologists for parents.

We’re stoked to have his passion for biodiversity and the natural world as part of the team.

Welcoming Murphy to our Taiao team 🌿

Murphy previously worked at the Department of Conservation, helping connect people with the taiao, and has also volunteered with Southern Lakes Sanctuary trapping.

She’s passionate about restoring biodiversity and creating healthier spaces for our native species to thrive, with a pretty simple goal in mind: more birdsong across our whenua.

Small but mighty Taiao team getting stuck into the spiky stuff 🌿

The crew has been clearing briar and gorse one metre either side of the new Kawarau Gorge Cycle Trail, helping get things ready before the trail opens to riders.

Awesome to continue supporting Southern Lakes Trails and the mahi happening along this trail. 🚲

Protecting Wai Whakaata means more than just getting native plants in the ground 🌿

Alongside creating habitat through planting, our Taiao team also carries out predator monitoring to understand what species are moving through the area and help guide our predator control mahi.

Using chew cards and tracking tunnels, we can look for bite marks and footprints to get a better picture of what’s out there.

Keep an eye on our stories, we’ll be putting your predator tracking skills to the test with a few interpretation quizzes 👀

The team has been out controlling woody weeds at Speargrass Flat Reserve and clearing around plantings along Hunter Road, helping give our native species the space they need to thrive.
