Tony Waugh has recently completed a book titled Ōtamakapua – ‘Child of the Cloud’ — The people, people, the land and the settlements of the Northern Manawatū, which looks at how land, law, and settlement shaped the inland Rangitīkei–Manawatū district. While it focuses on the Ōtamakapua Block, it connects directly to wider New Zealand themes — Māori land tenure, Crown purchasing, settlement schemes, and the long-term impacts of those processes.
The book brings together iwi traditions, government records, and local experience to tell that story in a way that is grounded in place but relevant more broadly.
Book Launches are planned at
Hansens café, Kimbolton Sunday 7 June 1:30pm
Coach House Museum, Feilding Thursday 11 June 11:30am
Palmerston North Central Library, Thursday 11 June 6:30pm
Awestone café, Mangaweka Saturday 20 June 2pm.

Can you spare some time on a Thursday to help at the Feilding & Districts Community Archive? Volunteers are needed to preserve donations like in the photo, brush dust off them, write lists of items, and put them in archival envelopes and boxes. People who like searching out answers to queries are needed as sharing copies of the items with descendants or the community is why they are being preserved. Please consider giving a few hours of your time
