Time, skill, and speed – all were of the essence for a recent mission to North Canterbury.
An accident where a man was seriously injured after his horse landed on him left the rescue helicopter crew with concerns.
“Patients who have crush or impact injuries can deteriorate quickly. We had to keep a close eye on him and get him to hospital,” Critical Care Paramedic Juliet says.
When they arrived on the scene the man was alert, but in a lot of pain.
“We had to work out pretty quickly if any of his injuries were immediately life threatening,” explains Juliet.
The crew used a portable ultrasound machine to check his lungs for any sign of collapse. The ultrasound machine was one of four purchased by the Trust for use on the rescue helicopters across Canterbury and the West Coast.
“The portable ultrasound machine is a fabulous piece of kit. It provides us vital information about what is going on inside the patient and helps us decide on the best treatment plan.”
Juliet says a big thanks goes to the crew from St John and locals who were on site.
“They did a fabulous job directing us to a nearby paddock to land in as we had to be far enough away that we wouldn’t spook the horses. Locals also used a four-wheeler to get us to the patient and then to help transport the patient back to the helicopter.”
