LIONS LEGACY | ROTOKARE SCENIC RESERVE

More than 20 years of rolling up their sleeves for conservation.

When a public meeting was called in Eltham in 2003 to discuss the declining state of Rotokare Scenic Reserve, several members of Eltham Lions were there.

What followed became something extraordinary.

Lions members helped with pest-control lines, cut tracks through difficult bush, painted and renovated buildings, planted trees, built sections of stairway around the perimeter fence, donated trap boxes and safety signage, supported bird reintroductions, provided helicopter time and equipment — and continued to fundraise and volunteer as the project grew.

Today, Rotokare is a 230-hectare predator-free sanctuary, protected by an 8.2km pest-proof fence, with native species being restored and reintroduced.

And Lions are still involved.

More than two decades later, members continue to give their time, equipment, expertise and financial support to help protect this remarkable place for future generations.

Service that helped restore a landscape — and continues today.

That is Legacy.

A wonderful start to Art for Awareness 2026!
Thank you to everyone who came along to the opening night and to all the artists and helpers who made it possible.

On Wednesday 24 young people (and their adult helpers) ended their busy third day of the Lions National Youth Camp with a visit to Lake Rotokare.

They had spent the day enjoying the sights in our area; a scavenger hunt at Te Popo Gardens, Pioneer Village, and Dawson Falls. Eltham Lions supplied them with a barbecue tea at the lake. Unfortunately a change in the weather meant they were unable to do their night walk but many still risked the rain for a walk around the lake.

What a fun night! 💙

We hosted a Blue September Quiz Night tonight at the Eltham Fire Brigade, with Lions members from Opunake, Bell Block, Kaponga, Toko, Broadway Stratford, New Plymouth Central, Inglewood joining us for the evening.

We had five rounds of quiz questions, plenty of laughs and some great friendly competition, with Opunake Lions Club taking out the win! 🏆

Best of all, together we raised an amazing $1,470.50 for Blue September. 💙

A huge thank you to everyone who came along, helped organise the evening, bought raffle tickets and supported the fundraiser.

We’d also like to thank our generous raffle prize donors, including Schurr & Ireland, Stanners Motors, Eltham Building Supplies Ltd, Eltham Farm Supplies, Coffee Shack, Eltham Vet Service, Wonder Distributors, Thomson O'Neil, Mini Kooper, Eltham Lions members and Lions families. Your generosity helped make the night such a success.

Art for Awareness exhibition is coming to The Village Gallery!

We’re getting ready for a wonderful community exhibition, organised by Eltham Lions Club South Taranaki, supporting Breast Cancer Foundation NZ, with painting, sculpture, wearable art, pottery, mixed media and more.

There’s still time to take part.
You don’t need to be an experienced artist, everyone is welcome to have a go.

By entering, you can:
- exhibit your work at The Village Gallery
- offer your work for sale
- choose how much of the sale you’d like to donate to Breast Cancer Foundation NZ
- have the chance to win one of several exhibition awards
- share your creativity with the community while supporting a great cause

At our meeting last night, District Governor Chris Pepper thanked the club for their work and support in the community and shared the International President's theme "Rooted in Service" with the message that service is the foundation of Lions. It’s who we are and what we do. Our roots run deep, stretching far and wide to build lasting connections and strengthen our world. It's up to us to grow and strengthen our clubs by inviting others into our story.

DG Chris also presented member Kent Williamson with his 20 year chevron to represent his 20 years of service to Lions, first at Rahotu-Pungarehu Club and now with Eltham.

Megan spoke about her involvement at the recent ANZI Pacific Forum in Auckland where she presented the Flag ceremony. The theme of the forum was Innovation, Inclusion and Impact with many workshops and inspiring keynote speakers. The forum is a great opportunity for all lions to meet and talk with the Lions Executive team ie. International President Mark Lyon along with IVPs Tony Benbow (Australia) and Manoj Shah (Kenya) as well as IPIP AP Singh and other Past International Presidents.

Next year's forum is in Bali.
